they had a knife with them.. they could have used the knife instead of the tin cup to cut through the wall..
they could have used the knife for many other things to their advantage..!!

shareI don't see how that is a major flaw at all. Cutting through the wall, whether by cup or knife, led to nothing. And what exactly could they have used the knife for that would have helped them so much?

If you watched the movie, one guy did that, cut through the wall which lead to another brick wall. Then they decided to give up. The only entrance was up the well.

I think the idea was that none of them wanted to sacrifice the knife to being dulled/broken/wasted in ripping out mortar because, in the back of their minds, they were ALL thinking about that knife's inevitable use.
Not that it really mattered when they started going at it barehanded - but still. An arguable plot point was that the kidnapper BELIEVED that they were all going to eventually resort to cannibalism so, on a subconscious level, they preserved the knife for that reason. Despite being an armchair shrink, I'd posit that each and every one of them was thinking of that scalpel as a tool they wanted to preserve for when they actually needed it.
There is only one flaw in this movie, that the boy is starting to eat his mother while she still looks fresh !!! Nobody would start cannibalism after a couple of days !!!

shareOh gosh yes, I was wondering when somebody was going to mention that the mother would be decomposing. When they are found, she still looks fresh and they say how long they were trapped. I've forgotten how long, but after just a few days she would stink to high heaven and be crawling with flies etc.
