Do These People Take Themselves Seriously?

I just finished watching this documentary, and I liked parts of it, but found it a bit depressing overall.

While I understand that the fashion industry employs many people and helps the economy, I am also bothered by the vapid pretentiousness.

Too much glorification of superficiality can't be good.

Fashion is an art to the people involved in the business. It's not pretentious at all. Some people don't understand the importance and probably never will.

Which would be worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?

It's not that I look down on it, I'm not obese and I don't want to argue. I probably am nerdy and unstylish.

There seems to be a lot of cruelty and de-humanization running through the fashion industry, I think that's what bothered me.

There is more cruelty and dehumanization running through the sweatshop industry, which probably clothed you.

That wasn't meant to come across as vicious. It was a response to things he/she had written in her post.

Valentino's designs are wonderful art pieces, and of course should be taken seriously. It's a serious business. He is a genius.

There is something wrong with you.

reply

Well, maybe there is something wrong with me. I acknowledge that this industry helps the economy. I acknowledge that this is an art form.

However, the nature of this business does not seem to be good for a person's character. The people depicted are snobbish, intolerant, vain and cruel.

Sorry, my comment was not directed at you, and the post at issue seems to have been removed.

Nothing wrong in your ideas as far as I can see.

for the creative minds behind the force, i have nothing but admiration & respect. however, the bloodsuckers that hang on their coat-tails, i do not.

I'm sure that Valentino is a genius, but the cruelty and superficiality depicted in the film did bother me.

reply

What cruelty and superficiality? Give me some examples ... the only thing that I found a tiny bit superficial was Valentino saying he didn't want any "midgets" in the runway show. But it's just who is he: over the top, primadonna, in the best way.

I think you'll find that most artists are very vain and very selfcentered, sometimes even cruel. I really don't think Picasso was a picnic to be around, for example. That doesn't take away from their art and even though people refuse to accept it Valentino's creations are works of art and he is a genius of his craft, the last one unfortunately.

And I'm sorry, but if you had spent 50 years of your life utterly dedicated to your vision and your career, you'd take it seriously too. We're not all of us working to save African orpahns but that does not make our work and our passions less important or serious, at least to us.

I'm no fashion nut and I certainly don't want to defend the fashion "hanger ons" and the financial leeches that are the driving force behind this industry but I do know enough about artistic merit to acknoledge that Valentino's creations are some serious works of utter beauty.
