Was Marcus supposed to be ambiguously gay?

I felt like it was going in that direction, with him *almost* saying something to Rob combined with the whole rejection of the girl and the fake-girlfriend thing...it was never really elaborated on after that, though, which I was disappointed by. Still a great movie, though. Did anyone else get the same vibe?

I am getting a similar vibe watching that scene by the tree.

I think he was but it definitely needed more elaboration. Would have been a nice touch to what was a pretty flat film.

Mais bien sûr.

This film needed at least one or two gay characters, it seems unreal at this time of age to represent modern adolescence without one gay character. They exist.

I think he was ambiguously gay. But to be pretentious for a second, I think it was to help represent his and Rob's relationship as that moment in a young guy's life when, on the cusp of manhood, the most important relationship in your life - a friendship with a guy - is replaced with a girlfriend.
Marcus sensed this transition, and didn't want to let his friend Rob go, while Rob was driven to move on, to the next milestone in life, and find a girl.
This film has many many ancillary threads in each of the separate storyline's. It's an interesting movie.
