So,now that I've seen all five Oscar contenders....

...I can say,in spite of a slow pace, this was the most original and the least audience-feeling-exploiting of the five films.Pitty it didn't get the Oscar.

Well, I have now seen four, and still believe that "Departures" deserved the award. Not to take anything away from "The Class", "Waltz with Bashir" and this spectacular film, but I believe "Departures" was of a class by itself, a timeless, beautiful, revelatory feature about the nature of what it is to live, and thus, to die. While "Revanche" also covered similar ground in a similarly fantastic way, I somehow still believe "Departures" will stand the test of time better than any of the others. That said, I believe that all four of the nominated films were more than worthy of an Oscar and I would not have been disappointed whatever film won. I just can't wait to see the fifth.

I'm surprised to see anyone heap so much praise on Departures. I thought it was nothing more than a light comedy with a couple of good scenes and a half baked sub-plot. Waltzy with Bashir was certainly much better. I haven't seen the other three nominees yet.

I'd have to say I'm very close in agreeing with 'TheGOLDENWALRUS' on this one. The only minor changes in my opinion, I'd give 'Revanche' 7.5/10 and 'The Class' 8/10 so we're seeing them pretty evenly.

The only one I haven't come across yet is 'The Baader Meinhof Complex.'

No. you guys are full of *beep* ;-) REVANCHE is the best and should have won.
I loved some of the other nominees, of course, but this one just blew me away, I was completely riveted from beginning to end.

Revanche was riveting, but at the same time weaving you through a really slow burn. It was all worth it, the acting was superb and the cinematography was outstanding. It should have won, easily. I'd put The Class second to this. I didn't care for Waltz With Bashir, and Departures was just ok.
