Nice touch at the end - robber never tells the wife ... *spoilers*

.. that he no longer wants to kill her husband. Perhaps they're trying to tell us that she senses by his demeanor - he seems settled in his mind, not testy, when she ends the relationship, and he peacefully agrees not to tell - that her husband isn't any longer in danger. Or maybe they leave that tension there for a bit, to linger. But I think they mean for us to think that, given the peaceful ending of the film.

I think he realized that it was just more an unfortunate accident.

Where's your crew?
On the 3rd planet.
There IS no 3rd planet!
Don't you think I know that?

If the shooting wasn't but an accident why the policeman was feeling so guilty?

He was feeling guilty because someone had died at his hands. It did not matter how it happened. He was also troubled that they could not get pregnant. He will get the child he wants. The wife and the lover give him something he needs to move on from the shooting. She will not tell the police he was a bank robber and he will not tell the husband is the father of the kid or at least he may be the father.
