white vulture

its not the same as kevin carters photograph.
anyone else notice that?

reply

Are you referring to the one in the trailer?

I'm wicked through and through...

reply

yeah. wonder why they didnt make it look like carters picture.

reply

The scene is recreated, based upon the original photo. It's so close to the real thing as to be almost, that's ALMOST, indestinquishable. Of course it's different, they used actors. The only thing I noticed is that the child in the picture is not as emaciated. That's not surprising.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

at 2:11 in the teaser the vulture looks white whereas in carters picture it is dark brown.

reply

I guess they should have auditioned more trained vultures.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

Or at least the right colored ones...

I'm wicked through and through...

reply

How come I get the feeling you are just pulling my leg?

I can hardly wait for this film to come out.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

The problem was, that when the lead vulture found out that we did not have the budget to go and shoot in Sudan, she pulled out, at the last minute, and her stand in had to do the job. Our lead vulture's agent refuses to speak to the press, and the matter was settled out of court.

reply

adamstop, we shall most certainly have a stern word with the vulture casting agencies.

reply

THERE, all taken care of.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

This thread is crackin' me up! Damn white vultures taking over the brown vultures roles... They think they own everything in Hollywood!

I'm wicked through and through...

reply

It is a shyting shame. What happened to ethnic authenticity?

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

Exactly, what ever happened to ethnic authenticity!

Can you believe that the backdrop of that scene was a mine dump in Soweto, WTF were the film makers thinking...........!

reply

Diva, please, I can hardly grasp this (catches breath), are you saying that films aren't (gasps) real? NO! (shakes fist) I'm completely disillustioned. (sobs)

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

It's all about the money, baby, we'll all sell our souls for money, fyck the craft of authentic film making, Hollywood needs to take care of that, we are tired of covering up for Hollywood, it's all out in the open now......

reply

lacey, don't forget that this film was shot in South Africa, seems the Whites are STILL trying to rule the Colored folks......

reply

Well, that explains the White Vulture. If it was in any other African country it would have been a true Black vulture instead of what we ended up getting. I'm surprised they actually found African American actors to play the roles of the S. African villagers. I was positive they'd all be white actors painted with Black Face! At least they kept something authentic in the film!

I'm wicked through and through...

reply

laceylou, you are wicked.

BTW, I've signed up to rep African vultures for future bits but have not heard back. I think they're disallusioned after their past treatment. And they're sick of that dam black vulture's diva attitude. It's screwing it for all of them.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

The poor soul (OP) who officially paved the way for us to have this deep, intellectual discussion about the importance of true authenticity when it comes to the wildlife in our films! I hope the original question was answered... And on that note...

How would we feel if Black bears were replaced by Polar Bears!? It would be a disaster, but nooooo, they had to mess with the damn vulture! I feel a boycot coming on until they do a re-shoot and put in a friggin' black vulture! Guilty, when you get your license to represent the African vultures, I feel it is your duty to force a re-shoot!

BTW~ I am extremely wicked and proud of it!

I'm wicked through and through...

reply

My strategy, should I be hired to rep the vultures, is to conduct a protest like Spike Lee had vs. Clint Eastwood about the lack of black (human) actors in WWII films. Now, all I need is a famous director to speak out for the vultures. Oh, think of it...how many directors could we relate to vultures? It's a rich field.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

I'd agree that most directors are vultures as they all take every last scrap after they viciously eye it from afar... I have a good feeling that this will be an easy mission and shouldn't take up too much time! Hail to the vultures, animal and man alike! Ride like the wind, oh mighty, aGuiltySoul! Hmm... That name is kind of fitting for this lil' conversation, isn't it? You're not a director, are you!?

I'm wicked through and through...

reply

No, not a film director. I'm not even much of a director for the nonfictional tale I call my life.

But then, I'd never ask you to trust me.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

I wasn't as bothered about the color of the vulture as I was about the rather healthy African child.

Director should have starved the child actor for a few weeks to make the scene look more authentic.

reply

I believe there are laws against that, although they possibly could have taken a child from a hospital ward. But, fortunately, the filmmakers value their souls higher than that.

Seriously, what this film does is drive it's audience to, at the very least, look up the original photos, some of which are shown at the end of the film, and further, to read the source book, which goes into quite a bit of depth about the pictures and the events surrounding them.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

IT DOES NOT TAKE 5 MINUTES TO SHOOT THAT SCENE, OR SHOT!!!!!!

Especially on a mine dump, that is not the most healthy place to be either.

We actually have very strict rules with regards to filming, in South Africa, ESPECIALLY when it involves children, animals, and overall safety.

Rumor has it that you have now pissed the white vulture off, because he thought that HE was the star of that shot.

Love it!! Miss this board lots!! The dreaded white vulture! Damn him!!

reply

yea, Lacey, I miss it too, and then things got soooo serious, and unfortunately, in my opinion, when I finally got to see the film, I just thought, "well, what the fyck", you can try your butt off, but the end result is just out of your reach!

Us is but to do and die, us is not to reason why, something like that.........!

But, the WHITE VULTURE is alive and well, he's living in the lap of luxury, I promise you that, I can send you a foto of his restaurant where he lives, and feeds, and if you do not trust me, ask Guilty Soul, she had not seen it, but will pass the foto on to you, if you are in e-mail contact.

have a fruitful evening!

reply

So you were disappointed in the end result, huh, DofD? I wish the deleted scenes on the DVD had been added to the film because I think they would have added some more detail and exposition....and all at the cost of about another four minutes.

The production elements were all there in this film: great costuming, cinematography, sets, lighting, scenery, as well as acting and directing. And I have a belief that some of the weaker parts of the film were a matter of editing. I know the edit was very, very long and a bone of contention for all that time. I'd like to see Silver's cut. Or yours.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

Maybe it was just that it was so emotional on set during the filming, not only for the photographers, but for the people living in those hostels as well, who were also there at the time.

When you look an old Induna ( Zulu elder) in the eye, and you see the pain of remembrance, it stirs up deep emotions in your soul.

If I did not work on the film, I most definitely would have had a different opinion about it.

reply

And that opinion would not be positive, I take it?

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

ARGH, the vulture.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

Maybe it was the directors subtle comment on who the vultures/photographers really were. White vulture=white photographer?????

reply

I was just thinkin'... Are vultures considered edible game? 'Cause if so, I'm gonna cook me up some nice steamin' white vulture stew!!

reply

Depends, Ms. Laceylou. The Bearded Vulture of SA is endangered as are several other varieties around the world. Besides, as has been pointed out here on this thread, they have representation. There would be ramifications. (boycotts, sit down strikes, marches, riots...on the part of the remaining vultures) Expect a stop action suit to be filed within the week. You will be notified.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

Oh My God!!! I am cracking up here, dammit! I haven't laughed that hard at a thread reply in a long time!! God, I miss you guys and our talks about the film and effing white vultures!!

I say bring on those aforementioned ramifications, cause we supporters of the true black vulture have some things we wanna say to their so-called demands of not eating white vultures simmering in a tomato based soup!!

reply

Surely you are not saying the black vultures promote cannibalism?!?

You sound like a rogue element. I'll be on the watch out.

(miss u 2)

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

Well, probably not the black vultures personally, but we the lovers of the black vultures would have no problem with White Vulture Chili on a nice cool evening!

reply

Seriously, ladies, BOTH white and black vultures, have political immunity in SA, it's better to stick to crocodile meat, if you want to eat it who eats it. However, the "Groot Krokodil', check him out on google, ex SA president, got scoffed, and no one knows by how many, white or black>, he he, wild life runs rampant here in SA.
