The elderly man on the tour

I just saw this when it was (reshown?) on Masterpiece Contemporary, and am surprised that there are so few messages.

My question is whether the elderly man on the tour (Jacob I believe) had been present at the trial (or at Auschwitz in general) or whether he was just relaying a story that he had heard?

It really depends on when this is supposed to take place. My guess is that is that either he was present or is the son of someone who was there and survived to be liberated. If so, he may have been told enough to know what happened.
