External Hardships

Overall it wasn't a bad movie, but I can see why Hurricane Season failed to secure wide release. While the acting and technical direction are fine, the underlying story lacks real drama. Even though scenes are peppered with emotional displays, they all seem to be driven by or in response to outside events.

The hurricane, its resulting difficulties, histrionics stemming from basketball -- it all seemed layered over a generic high school sports fable. Perhaps it was focused to a fault on fulfilling the requirements of a team sports plot, missing the opportunity to develop compelling characters to propel that plot. For a movie so proud of underdogs, it doesn't make one want to root.

If you didn't feel enough for these characters to root for the team, there is simply something wrong with you.
