the photo and the car

clearly I missed something, so perhaps someone can clear it up
our victim-to-be doesn't suspect anything is wrong until she finds a photo of some people around a car. she then looks outside and sees what I assume is the same car and that seems to arouse her suspicions. but why?

because the people she met (the ulman's) aren't the people on the photograph. why would there be a family photo stashed in a bag in a closet of a family that isn't the ulman's who claim to be the owners of the house?

and later, we, the audience, see the actual family and owners of the house dead and mutilated in a room.

If you start sitting around the campfire, telling scary stories -- change our names!

ah I hadn't realised that, I'd assumed it to be an old photo of them since they had mentioned having children who'd left home

This is exactly what I thought. Plenty of other things to arouse suspicious by why THAT? Could have been family members and sometimes cars end up rotating in a family, sold from son to parents, or currently broken down but family member doesn't want to get rid of it, for whatever reason. Whatever better place to keep it than here, with all the land and obviously no storage issues.

I thought it was weird THAT was what got her to run around the house with a knife.

I understand where you're coming from but in my opinion, I think I would've been just as suspicious. I think you have to take into the account that she was skeptical already when she saw the furs in the closet, despite the woman saying she was getting them in the basement. Also it was a bag full of many framed pictures, none of which were of the people she had just met. So when she saw a picture of a family standing around the Volvo, it raised some questions. When she took the picture outside and saw the van on the side of the house, I think that made her definitely paranoid.
