The ELEPHANT in the room...

I'm sorry, but you'll be hard pressed to find a straight roller derby girl. It's more or less a gay sport. So why did they think it necessary to give all these characters boyfriends? seriously?

they could have just left it alone, not mentioned love interests. the movie was action packed enough without that.

when ellen paige slept with that pathetic boy I was so angry. I felt lied to! so irritating.

otherwise, i loved the movie.

"It's more or less a gay sport" . I think you're wrong. Read the following article from a lesbian magazine: http://www.divamag.co.uk/diva/features.asp?AID=2724.

An excerpt:
"But Mushill and Sloan both say that the new-school roller derby isn’t as heavily populated by lesbians as other sports are – like rugby, or NBA. ‘Roller derby is a very different community from, say, the rugby one,’ says Mushill. ‘I can think of only six women in my league who are gay. When I played rugby, it was the ultimate gay sport. Only three of the women were straight!’"

As for Bliss and Oliver, lots of posters on this board really enjoyed their relationship - I guess opinions vary.

Have you ever been to an afterparty? Lol.

It always hurts my senses to see Ellen Paige playing countless straight roles. It's like a square peg in a round role.

reply

"Have you ever been to an afterparty?" No I haven't. But obviously the league that the roller derby girls refered to was mostly non-gay and their after-parties would have reflected that. Likely the leagues that Shauna Cross was in were the same.

Ellen's last name is Page. Here's some pictures of Ellen and Landon taken by a pap in Austin inbetween filming. Maybe your assumptions about her are wrong.

crebecca, are you a troll? Why else would you write something like this. Both my roller derby friends are straight, so I'd say reality is 180 degrees opposite of your fantasy world. Admittedly it's a small sample, but 100% of skaters surveyed (2 out of 2) are unabashedly out-of-the-closet heterosexual. ;-)

Why?

why for goodness sake? is she not an actress? thats what they do. act. play different people. you must really hate neil patrick harris then...

And anyway exactly how many characters actually had male boyfriends/spouses/husbands? I didnt really see that many. three maybe?

I play roller derby, and while I certainly know several lesbian/queer/bisexual women in our league, the majority are straight. This does not mean that all leagues are the same, but it does mean that you are wrong.

I know a lot of people (lesbians included) were disappointed that alternative sexualities were ignored in this film, which I understand - they're underrepresented in many films/stories. That being said, I can also understand the desire to get away from the stereotype (that clearly persists) that all rollergirls are gay. While calling somebody gay is not (and should not be) and insult, calling all rollergirls gay is not true.

You don't have to be gay to like and play roller derby (or rugby or field hockey or softball...). The gender you prefer to have sex with has very little to do with your athletic ability.

reply

The three leagues I've been involved with, the majority of girls were straight. So, no, it's actually quite easy to find straight derby girls.

reply

It's hard to strike the right balance - you don't want to ignore the lesbians that are obviously present, no matter how prevalent, but you also want to get away from the stereotype. In my opinion, though, if they were going to give them all boyfriends, they could have given at least one or two a girlfriend. It'd be more realistic. Most movies would actually be more realistic that way.

I play roller derby, and out of our leagure of about 60 girls, we have 2 lesbians, and maybe 5 bi girls. Everyone else is married with kids.

Sometimes the difference between self-amusement and self-actualization is less than you think.

reply

No, I'm not a troll :) What country are you guys in? I'm just curious because the only way I even knew this was a sport was because a few of my lesbian friends play and they basically said it's full of them. Maybe it's a different scene here in the UK?

I dunno. I didn't mean to offend anyone, I'm gay myself. I recently went to a local tournament and it was a very gay event.

reply

Maybe the event you saw was with a gay league. There are a few all-lesbian leagues around that I've heard of.

I just joined a derby team in Florida. Considering the amount of husbands and boyfriends who show up to practices and who ref the games (including my own husband), I'd say a majority of the girls are straight, maybe all of the girls. No idea really though, the subject of sexuality hasn't come up because - newsflash - IT DOESN'T MATTER. A girl's sexuality has NOTHING to do with her ability to hit hard and get around the track. Most of us really could care less who we're on a team with as long as she can hustle, follow the rules, and do what she's supposed to do. That's ALL that matters in derby.

You're too bogged down in stereotypes, and I can tell you with a measure of certainty that your generalization is far less offensive to me than it would be to a lesbian (they aren't all jocks!). I know you didn't mean to offend anyone, but being gay yourself, you should know better.

reply

I'm a rollergirl in the UK and my league is mostly straight women although there is a handful of lesbians and bisexuals.

They gave the characters in the film boyfriends because so many rollergirls are in heterosexual relationships.

By the way, in the hot tub scene, Eva Destruction and Rosa Sparks appear to be getting very cosy together. So there's your lesbians.

reply

I don't think the movie insinuated that all the TXRD girls were straight. Unless I'm mistaken, the only players connected with straight relationships were Bliss (Page), Smashley Simpson(Barrymore), and Maggie Mayhem (Wiig). As a matter of fact, I wouldn't at all be surprised if Rosa Sparks and/or some of the other girls were gay. Did you not see the hot tub scene? Those two were mighty close...

reply

No, not an elephant. Not even an armidillo. First of all I did not see this movie to be educated on the real world of roller derby. Secondly I have no reason to believe that the world of roller derby is heavily populated by lesbians that it is completely unbelieveable that a girl who didn't even know what roller derby was until some girls skated into a store and dropped a flyer in front of her could possibly take interest in the store and still like boys.

I thik you just need to relax and enjoy this fictional movie for what it is.

Your FACE is a signature!

reply

Yeah, the girls in the hot tub seemed to be into each other, it wasn't overt but it was vaguely implied

no mesage? are you a moron?!? Must be if you think rollerderby is a lesbian thing. Straight girls kick ass too you know. Drew's character didn't just mention her fiance, she beat the crap out of him at the party. How dare someone have a fiance, O M G.
this film was chocked full of messages too; be who you are, your parents aren't necessarily evil, don't judge a book by it's cover, it goes on and on.

If anything is pathetic here it would be you and the OP.

I think everyone pretty much hit the nail on the head in replies to the fact that as far as anyone can tell, the majority of the derby girls are heterosexual. As far as I've seen, the ladies have boyfriends/husbands and such, but they're very open-minded and don't judge. There's also the fact that they have the whole "derby wife" thing going on. Much like the way that many best friends call their female best friend their "wifey" derby girls have derby wives. I've not been to Roller Con, but I heard that they can "marry" their derby wife. So they're all much more open-minded, very affectionate with each other (they like to practice moves on each other outside of practice or bouts) and so I think that shows.
