68 mins?

Is there an edited version of this movie? It says on IMDb the movie is 75 minute-long, but I just realized that the one I saw was 68 mins. What's missing? Thanks. :)

If you saw it on DVD, then it's because film runs at a slightly different speed than dvd. Film runs at 24 frames per second, as opposed to DVD, which runs at 25fps, which means an approximate speed-up of 4% on dvd. This is why many BluRay players make such a strong advertisment for 24p, which shows them at the right framerate. There are people who claim to be able to hear the increase in pitch caused by PAL speed-up; personally I can't tell the difference, so how true this is I don't know.

The vast majority of film lengths (apart from TV movies) will generally not coincide with the dvd running time, the only exception being NTSC or Region One dvd's.

Hope that helps (and makes sense!)

Thanks, I was wondering about the length too.

That's very interesting, but the numbers still don't work. 75 minutes at 25fps would only last 71, not 67 as is the DVD.

Although I've just checked and on the DVD extras they say it is 71 minutes which shortens to 68.

Also - how come my 24p blu ray player, when I watch the DVD, still plays it to 67 mins? That's just irritating.

You are right that the numbers don't add up, although they do account for some of the difference I can honestly say I have no idea where the rest of the time has gone!

As for your BluRay player, that one is slightly easier to answer... You oly see 24p on BluRay discs, and even then only those which are encoded to 24p. DVD's will still play back at 1080p/50i or 1080p/60i depending on the region (and with regard to the 1080, that will be as set, so could be 1080i/720p dependant on what you set it to scale at).

On some players there is an indicator (mine has one; a Sony BDP-350) which lights up on 24p playback; It will only ever light up on BluRay, and then they have to be encoded in 24p, which is standard for most films. If you buy something like "Life" or "Planet Earth", which were specifically made for TV, you'll find you don't get 24p on them either.

As an addendum to the above, I've just noticed that the running time IS 71 min in the UK, but IMDB have also added: | Germany:75 min (Berlin International Film Festival | which does indicate there are two versions. The DVD will be the 71 minutes, reduced to 68 due to PAL, but as for that elusive 75 minute edition, it seems it does exist... I'll do some rooting around later and see if I can come up with an answer.
