Did they actually go to Paris?

I was just wondering because its shot in colour and they actually find Maria. What does everyone else think?

I was thinking about this myself -before I read your question on here- and for me the answer is no, probably not.

The tip off is that the Paris trip is in colour -like the fantasy trip to Oz in The Wizard of Oz, whereas (just as in that film) real life is in black and white.

I doubt they would have found Maria, anyway.

Also, you need a passport even for a day trip to France via the chunnel, and I doubt Tomo would have one, or perhaps even apply for one as he was a runaway. -Plus passports are about £75 now!

I prefer Imaginality to reality.

Maybe the London café owner was able to give them a phone number. It seems unlikely, because he seemed to have written her off, but it's a film, not a biography.

The colour sequences at the end were shot in four different locations within Paris. I agree with the Wizard of Oz detail, but I think you're reading too much into it.

I mentioned the passport thing in another thread, and you're completely right. There's no way he would have been able to get one anyway, since he had no ID that was checkable, and presumably wanted to stay hidden from his family in Nottingham.

I loved it when they were talking about going to paris and finding maria,
'I bet she's popular in paris' my favourite line in the film :-)
I agree about the fantasy, just because no way they would have been able to afford to get to paris.

Yeah....when i was watching it, i thought that segment of the film was probably just fantasy.

It's nice to think that they went to Paris, who knows? Only Shane Meadows knows I guess.

I think not for four reasons:

1) Lack of passport for Tomo (and expense of getting one)

2) The father seemed to be working as a builder and would thus have been working for a contractor and not have access to cheap tickets.

3) Had the gone to Paris they would not have been able to find Maria

4) The 'clue' of the fuzzy, colour, footage of the Paris segment.

None of these are absolute killer arguments (e.g. it's just conceivable that they could have got an address for Maria and she would have dropped everything to spend time with them), but taken together, it seems to indicate the segment was elucidating just their idea of an idealised version of what could happen.
