Another movie about the 1%

Let's have some movies about real human beings, and not life sucking leeches that feed off other's misery.

~ I'm a 21st century man and I don't wanna be here.

Sounds like you've missed the point.

This movie isn't about the Obama administration.

I too was initially bothered by how expensive his house was and how easily he spent money. I suspect there was a little bit of "rich porn" (the next thing after "food porn") going on.

But mainly I understand why they did it. They had a story to tell, and they didn't want any "practical" issues to divert any attention at all, so they just "magicked" him a whole lot of money and then completely ignored the whole issue for the rest of the film.

Thic made it sort of a chick flick -- elements of women’s romance. The man could be free to be quirky and spontaneous and always stylish and always able to provide whatever (material) the lady or her kid wanted without hesitation or worry. I found it annoying. Very indulgent the way the guy could work out his “huge life problem” (i.e. having a hot and loving wife that he supposedly didn’t love, and a job that required little effort) by just dramatically smashing things.

I noticed that too but if you think about it nothing they did together was dependant on his money, things or station. Everything they did was really just down to his car and some tools that maybe set him back a few hundred; both things that normal people have access to. His job looked fairly complex as well and we saw his work quality declining throughout the film and even his step-father/boss stepping in due to his bad work decisions, not even counting the bathroom stall. The film went to great lengths to skip over divides such as class and just focus on people connecting on simple human levels. Only thing might be the spinning horsey thing at the end, but I have no idea how much that cost or if it was even his money. The story would have been the same if he had just been average middle-class even. The rich stuff I guess was just there because it's currently trendy and seems more dramatic.

Nothing was dependant on his money? I haven't even seen the film, but seeing a guy smash his refrigerator (not to mention his entire house), is most definitely dependent on his money. Had I done the same thing my life would be ruined, like, forever. It's kinda arrogant actually, to portray it like this. I have enough money that I could actually destroy my fridge and by a new one without a dent in my economy, my kitchen, that would set me back a good bit... my house? Like I said, no more life. Forever in debt, no more real estate, just renting (while at the same time paying down mortgage). It's
unsympathetic, to blatantly throw away money like that.. like pouring champagne down the sink, just because you can. I really don't give a crap if there is a deeper meaning, it's still an arrogant move.

The movie revealed that he did not come from money, the job that provided all of the money came as a result of meeting and marrying his wife. Furthermore, his income has little to no relevance when it comes to the theme and message of this movie.

You're obsessed with porn chuck-526, give it a rest for a week or two.

I felt the point was the he was part of the 1% and inherently unlikable, but then re-evaluates his money, career, possessions, and station in life after losing his wife and realizing how much he doesn't miss her and took her for granted. I think it's an interesting dilemma that makes the movie more original and offers more intriguing scenarios than my boring life at least.

there are plenty of movies about marginalized, lower income people

you just aren't interested in watching them, apparently

reply

is it really? the money was just there to say that it means *beep* if something like that happens. aside from that i dont think death by a car accident and losing your wife and life is a problem that might only touch the 1%
