I think this film is worth a viewing

I just finished watching this movie and I don't think it had plot holes. I think the pieces you get along the way mirrors the concept of Danny sneaking around for the secrets and truths in his life.

I don't think you can compare it to American Beauty just because there is a scene with a rose in it; and even if some things were adapted from other themes and characters in movies; Name a movie that doesn't do that to some degree. That inspiration and tribute is part of what the art of film is about. Passing it along to a new audience.

I find some of the people commenting here are trying too hard to pick something to pieces instead of looking for the value.

People making sacrifices. Sacrifices that are silent, some that are whispered of; and some buried at the great cost of lost innocence and the thin lines that separate the good from the evil; and the depths people will go to protect what little good they find in the world. How lies or silence to protect someone you love can backfire into more loss than if never protected them at all.

There are many things to see in this film besides looking to throw mud at someone who is trying to bring attention to lives that meet extraordinary conditions. How and why do they go on?

I would give this film an 8 out of 10 and would suggest you take a chance on it and not listen to the anti hype I've read on this message board. Then maybe come back and post something more positive about your experience; or some well stated critiques.

"I would give this film an 8 out of 10"

Really? Would that be your honest assessment or perhaps you are biased?

Your defence for this film would be fine if the film was actually any good. It's just simply cringe worthy.

The movie is full of cliches. About half way through the movie I thought that the only way this movie can redeem itself is by making it all into a giant misunderstanding or a joke. Fortunately, that's how things turned out to be. So, the movie was not really that bad. Many of the cliches could be explained by the fact that they were seen through the boy's eyes (e.g. boy finding his lost mother, a menacing looking man being a serial killer, uptight father being a child abuser). But there were still things that did not make much sense - e.g. climbing over somebody's fence in clear daylight without anybody seeing, unbelievably naked prostitutes parading on the street. I think this movie deserves about 6 out of 10.
