Was Julian supposed to be American?

There was some awful backstory about Julian getting kicked out of tournaments in the states. It seemed like throughout the movie Christopher Egan was trying to do an American accent. He had an epic fail in that situation. Each sentence had an Australian sounding word in it.

Why not just say hes an Australian and let the actor focus on other things?

Agreed. I didn't even realize he was supposed to be American...

Apparently he was supposed to be American by what they said about being kicked off the U.S. team. It was distracting because he spoke a very weird American/Australian mix. I'm guessing they came up with that so they could include the possibility of him leaving for the U.S. team.

If I hadn't seen the beginning and known Egan was Australian, I would have assumed he was an American actor doing a bad Australian accent. Heh.

You did just fine, Clarence. Now go git yo'self some hot cornbread!

A "weird American/Australian mix" is just what one should expect from a Yank who's lived in Australia for some time and started to adjust to the local accent.

The scene when he ran up to his professor he said he needed a pass to keep his student visa open, so I'll assume he was an American.

Strangely, right at the beginning I thought he looked and acted like a young Ryan O'Neil.

I assumed he was Australian because Chris Egan is Australian in real-life and he sounded Australian in this movie as well.
