Question about Anna/Ending - 'SPOILERS'

Hi,

I just watched this movie and I am a little confused about a few things. I read all the posts but only one touched on it a bit. Can someone please clarify the ending for me?

Anna was only appearing in his dreams? So his encounters with her were not 'real' until the end? Why did she want him dead? (aside from the fact that he didn't want to be with her or was that the only reason?) She apparently tried to murder the family that lived in the house at one time but why did she appear to Julian? Since he was skilled in martial arts how was he not able to fight her off? I don't understand why he gets killed in the end? Then in the credits they flash to him in bed with her - is this signifiying he is now with her in death?

Sorry...I had a little trouble with the plot. It didn't make a lot of sense to me.

my understanding is that anna is a ghost that only appears in his dreams...until the end of the film, where she crosses over from the spirit world to the real world...and then kills him...

Having martial arts skill seemed pointless since, if it was indeed all in his dreams - couldn't he then simply shape the outcome to his own advantage? I'm putting too much thought into it, definitely more than what went into devising the plot anyway.

I think it had some interesting ideas in it, but I found it a bit confusing.
