I'm thinking he sent it when drunk. His drinking must play into this as it was mentioned in the beginning he was kicked off the fight team in America because of it.

I disagree. Anna was clearly doing things in the real world before she was able to fully manifest at the end of the movie. For example, she locked Clare in the bathroom - Julian wasn't drunk then so that wasn't him.
