Colorization of this film sucked

Muted colors to the point of near black & white probably would have worked well for this film (true b&w might have been even better, if anyone knew how to do that well anymore), but the constant shifting between that and normal color, with apparently no rhyme or reason as to when or why, is not only distracting but extremely annoying after awhile. It's gotten to the point where noticing that overrides keeping up with the plot and seriously interferes with watching the film.
If you're going to play with color, it needs to be (preferably) transparent to the viewer, or at least correlate with what's happening in the film. Robert Wiene was able to understand that brilliantly in 1920 with 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari', and even Steven Soderbergh managed it successfully as late as 1991 in 'Kafka' [and yeah, I get that technically it would be the cinematographer, not the director, that is responsible but ultimately it is the director that gets the credit, or in this case the blame].
I can't comment on the rest of the film (and how little it seems to relate to Clive's printed works) at the moment, as I'm still too disconcerted by the color issues right now - maybe later...
