Slow and boring?

No offense to anyone who enjoyed this, to me it was a well directed movie with an interesting idea but a terribly boring plot.

I couldn't agree more, in fact I switched channels a hour into it, did absolutly nothing for me and I actually like most of any thing Clive Barker. I wish Hollywood would quit messing around and bring Weaveworld to the big screen. The technology is there. Also, The Great & Secret Show or Imajica. I think Peter Jackson sould be offered the chance to take on any of those epic's.

The Books of Blood are a fantastic written collection of short stories, and the sub-story at the beginning is great as well (Clive Barker is amazing). However, the movie was terrible, since the story ended up lost to hollywood's need to turn a few pages of writing into a feature-length film. If you want to see an awesome Clive Barker film, watch Candyman or The Midnight Meat Train instead. They're much better.

Also, if you want to actually enjoy the storyline, find the Books of Blood in a used bookstore somewhere; it is definitely worth the read. I also blame a bit of the movie's problems on poor casting, especially for the part of Mary; but Sophie Ward really didn't have much to work with, since they completely changed her character's personality, profession, and everything else about her. I really felt like I wasted some valuable time on this movie.

I just rented this from the Redbox...I was hoping for much better. Clive's "Books of Blood" is great (got it from Borders :D), but this movie was just blah. As the OP said, the plot was terribly dull and the story went absolutely nowhere. I have a good attention span for long and drawnout movies and stuff, but this was sooooo dull and nothing happened through the movie at all. The acting was stiff and it was basically a generic plot with generic directing.

It isn't the worst movie I've ever seen, so a 4/10 is decent.

I have to agree with everything people are saying, very slow speed of the movie. Unfortunately it reminded me of the pace of Hellraiser. I have read Hellbound Heart and I found it had the same pace as the movie. I'm intrigued by how many people are impressed with the story from book of blood. I'm gonna read it now for sure.

reply

You think both Hellraiser and the Hellbound Heart have "boring" or "slow" pacing? Wow.

hmm, not sure that deserved a 'Wow', but you called it. The book was extremely slow. I would like to know what books you are comparing this to, like what do *you* consider slow?

reply

Books that I'm comparing it to? Well, I've read most King, Matheson, and actually every Barker book. Hellbound heart is not a slow read. I would consider Dune a slow read. Barker's ability is his atmosphere that surrounds his characters, and not so much the characters themselves (not to say that he can't write good characters).

I still wouldn't Hellbound Heart a slow read, especially if I can finish it over a few *beep* or having it as a 4-hour audio book.

I agree, the storys good, just hollywood, messing about trying to turn it into a feature length film ruined it.

Absolutely boring. There may have been a few good things about the film, but they were far outweighed by the oppressively tedious pacing and go-nowhere plot.
I haven't read the book so this is based strictly on the film, which I don't like at all.

The movie certainly moves as a snail's pace, no question... and it meanders for a good 60 minutes. But I personally didn't find this boring. The first 60 minutes actually reminded me a lot of Hellraiser. Very similar thematically and aesthetically.

Good movie imo.

This movie was one of the worst wastes of my time that I have ever experienced.
Very long time before anything happens...and when it does...nothing happens.
The dialogue was a joke...and not a funny one.
The acting was atrocious.
And to top everything off...special effects were less than special.

There is literally nothing good about this film.

Bad films are a crime against humanity.

reply

Agreed, I just got done watching it for the first time and I really didn't like the film at all. It is well directed and has a good plot like you stated but I think they are the only positives of the film. I gave it a 3/10

reply

I agree.
