The acting

Ok when i see the trailer i allready know this is a movie with very bad acting. If u hear the way they say there lines... Like they read it from a piece of paper...

Dutch in general can't act! Even many 10 year old american kids can act 10 times better then your average dutch actor, its unbelievable...

reply

I agree that there aren't many good Dutch actors and actresses. But of course you can't really compare it to American actors. America has like 50x more actors and actresses than Holland does, maybe even more.

About the movie...
Indeed, the acting looks kinda lame. I can see that and my friends can see that.
But that doesn't stop us from watching this movie.
Why? Because there is no movie like this. There are hundreds of christmas horror movies, but one about Sinterklaas has never been made before.
I think this is going to be one of those 'It's so bad, it's good' movies.

About the Dutch parents who are against the movie and the movieposters with the silhouette of a scary looking Sint: They should stop whining so much.
Like Dick Maas told them: If your children still believe in the Sint, just make a new story behind it, like: The man on the poster is not the Sint, it's his crazy brother.

That's all I have to say about that; Forrest Gump

"If u hear the way they say there lines... Like they read it from a piece of paper... "

omg! i said the exact same thing to a friend a few days ago! so it isn't just me :oP

i'd like to add...i've never seen or heard anyone talk in real life as they do in dutch movies. it's so fake!

somewhere it all went wrong. cause i've seen really old dutch movies, from the 60's or earlier, that did have great acting.

but i might still see this movie only cause some people are whining about how bad it is for their kids to see saint nik as an evil person. but somehow it's ok to have their kids see him as a white man who has dumb black slaves....

I'm Dutch and i've never in my life seen someone act well in a Dutch movie.

There is just something about Dutch movies, possibly the scripts, that makes Dutch actors just sound stupid and horrible.
If you were Dutch you would know what i mean when i say almost all Dutch actors sound like "kakkers" with a "soft R" in their speech.

It's stupid because most people in Holland simply do not sound like that and it betrays the uppity background a lot of Dutch actors have.

Also, the voices in Dutch movies sound like when you hear bad American dubbing in an Italian movie, like it's tacked on.

The funny thing is, some Dutch actors do a pretty good job once they have a role in an American film, like Rutger Hauer (who sounds just as fake in Dutch movies, btw). It's either the dubbing, the quality of the lines they are made to say, or something else, but Americans and English are so much better actors generally (mediocre in America is still better than Holland's "best") that it's just pathetic.

On another note, Dutch moviemakers think they are so "sexually liberated" by having so much nudity and sex in their movies, but they don't even realize what they're showing is pure vulgarity, rather than sexuality. Dutch movies have a tendency to make sexuality look dirty in a bad way. It always seem more frustrated and deviant than "liberated". Even "Porky's" had classier sex and nudity because at least they're laughing at it instead of taking it seriously like Dutch filmmakers do.

I realised it's not the acting but the writing/directing, when I saw everyone in "Sint" force their dialogue while acting way below the level I've seen them act in previous productions. The lines look great on paper, but very fake when actually spoken. The actors' hands are pretty much tied in this case.

uhmm...i wouldn't put carice van houten on a list of good actors, see her small part in repo men, that was just awful.

huub stapel is actually really good. you should see him in the german movie knockin' on heaven's door.

sorry to say, i haven't seen the others you mentioned act. well...maybe not sorry.

Waldemar Torrentstra played Carice's husband in 'De Gelukkige Huisvrouw'. Barry Atsma played her husband in 'Komt Een Vrouw Bij De Dokter'...

I agree that a lot of Dutch actors, including good ones, have trouble with acting on camera.
Probably all of them are trained for the stage where it has to be BIG.

There are a few, like Carice van Houten who manage to keep it smaller and realistic.
It's also somewhat the director's responsibility to keep the actors in check.

About the sint,
im more intrested in the story then the acting...

Some actors are ok, but most of them arent...

I havent seen a dutch or turkish movie where the acting is hollywood good...

And about bad sinterklaas movies and bad santa movies...

Santa is a ripoff of sinterklaas... It all started with sinterklaas, but then it got changed and changed in different cultures, and eventually santaclause (santa = saint Claus = Klaas) was born. Then santaclause got merged in cultures... and because of hollywood santaclause become bigger and bigger...
In america people dont know sinterklaas, they only know santaclause...

reply

It depends

What do you call "Hollywood good"?

Hollywood is the standard, so the trend is to label everything that doesn't live up to that standard as being bad, which is a bit short sighted if you ask me.
Especially Americans seem to think there culture and movie industry is superior to others and don't want to acknowledge other countries make good movies too (hence remakes of European movies, which Hollywood needs, because they themselves have run out of original ideas years ago)

A movie should first of all be entertaining.
When i don't get bored between the opening titles and the end credits, i consider it a decent movie, because i have seen many and most of the times i already know what's gonna happen.
When a movie actually surprises me, i consider it to be great even

Off course it nice if actors can actually act, but even if they act really good and win Oscar's or Emmy's; it's still acting, pretending. FAKE.
So acting skills are overrated, since it's always fake anyway (and we know that)

reply

Its true. Tho I was happy to see in the trailer the acting came off much worse then when I was actually watching the feature film . In fact the first part of the film was pretty good(if it wasn't for the horrible water riple cgi effect), second part not so much..
Next time, get better people to create a trailer. If it wasn't for a friend of mine I wouldn't have been watching it anyway.

There's a couple of Dutch actors I really like though: Rutger Hauer, Yorick van Wageningen, Pierre Bokma, Gijs Scholten van Aschat, Peter Blok, Jaap Spijkers (so basically the Cloaca-leads :).. can we get credit for Famke Jansen?

It's the younger generation in particular that causes me to flinch.

Thank you for your very interesting and positive criticism. *ironic*
Come on, what utter nonsense to regard all Dutch acting as bad. Have you ever really watched quality Dutch TV or movies? Probably not, for most of it doesn't make it to the US. Because you just don't watch a movie with subtitles! Go figure why most Americans don't know any other languages than the so-called English you use. Get real, and drop your redneck arrogance.

reply

Dutch acting is so bad..... that we share the fifth place on the list of foreign language Academy Awards: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_Academy_Awards_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film
These Americans must be crazy to give these prizes to Dutch movies!!

Really, Holland has just as much good actors AND bad actors as the US, if you take into account the size of the country. Thinking about it.. the best actors in many Hollywood movies are actually British/Australian/etc.
