Charly refused to be put inside the full body scan machine because he was so paranoid that he would be vulnerable to be hit that the doctors had no choice but to give him a partial xray while he stayed in bed. Therefore the gun he had hidden UNDER HIS MATTRESS showed up through the scan! They actually said it in the scene when the other cop asked the same question.
I thought it was a great movie, and the music was perfect!
