Those of us "on the other side of the pond" kinda like that sound. According to Dick Wolf be was trying to mimic the sound of a jail door closing. Successful or not, it became a big part of L&O here.

I wish they had just used the real sound of jail door closing instead.
I will have to give the show another go though, try and get the jail door image into my head when I hear that sound...it might not be so distracting that way.

That "sound" is such an integral part of the show. It just would NOT be L&O without it.
