Heiner Lauterbach vs Tom Cruise?

Is this role to Lauterbach similar to the role of Vincent (in Collateral) to Tom Cruise? Or did he play many "villains"? I didn't watch too many films starring H. Lauterbach, but I remember him in the roles of a very caring father and professional police inspector.
