Ghajini was the name of the villian, the guy who killed his girlfriend Kalpana. Revenge becomes the singular focus of our protagonist, hence the name.

But Ghajini was also a character in Indian history. A man known for his ruthless and plundering of wealth in central Asia several centuries ago - Afghanistan to northern India (including what's now Pakistan).

It is a reference to the Afghan ruler/invader Mohammad Ghazini.
It is used in Tamil as a slang for people who are stubborn and go to any lengths to get to their goal. It was a reference to the hero in the Tamil version. They wanted to keep the name, so they named the villain Ghajini in the Hindi version.
