The Chinese workers

Don't get me wrong, I think that Biutiful is a well crafted film, but do you think that the sequences with the Chinese or African workers were really necessary? I would have liked the film to be even more focused on Uxbal's inner feelings and his relationship with his family. Scenes like the one in the woods when he sees his father, or when he's with his daughter and he gives her the diamond ring really stand out.

I think those two subplots really fleshed out Uxbal's life and what he did day-to-day. Without them, the movie would have been empty except for his family life.

Spoiler Alert!!!

The death scene of the workers really freaked me out. Hearing them crawl around on the ceiling with Uxbal scared to turn around and face them is truly terrifying. To me it really made the movie into something else entirely.

Agree with Brian. The 'cheap heater' scene really got to me. This subplot really added something important to the movie.
