I had no idea it was the same filmmaker of all these films. Altough now I see the connection,,,the filming, the camera work, the heartache I felt watching these depressingly beautiful movies.

I love Amores Perros and Babel because I think the multiple-story format coincides with multiple levels of meanings and symbolisms.

I think that the main flaw/danger in Inaritu's work is that there's too much misfortune and pain for the characters, so much that one may accuse him for causing misery just for the sake of causing misery. I think this criticism actually applies to 21 Grams, which was just painful to watch without providing the audience anything further than absolute sadness. It was also the first movie of his I ever watched, so not a great start - but my views on him were changed after watching Babel and Amores Perros. I was also lucky enough to attend a masterclass with him at 2010's BFI festival which followed the premiere of Biutiful and I really appreciated his insights on the process of film-making.

Biutiful stands somewhere in between the success of Amores Perros and Babel and the failure of 21 Grams. I mean that it is a bit too gloomy for the sake of it, but on the other hand it has a well-developed plot and a haunting atmosphere - not to mention the excellent acting.

Biutiful, 8/10

These are all based on seeing these films once. I'll get back to them eventually and possibly find more in them to love. This one was harder for me to fully appreciate than his others.
