This movie made me sad so I'm giving it a negative rating.

That's the consensus I gathered while scrolling through reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. People think it's too depressing so they give it a poor rating. I find this point of view very odd. Are they the kind of people who see a photo of a starving child and look away thinking it should not have been presented to them, and then reprimand the photographer?

One negative review stated that it's "a punishing reminder of how rotten the universe can be." Another said it "winds up just being deeply depressing."

And? Why is that a bad thing? If a movie about melancholy things is making you sad then it must be a successful effort. Or do people think that cancer and slave labour are too absurd subject matters to be realistic, therefore making the director pretentious?

I remember reading the same opinions about Lilja 4-Ever. "1 star, too depressing." A strange critique.

If a film affects you in any way, then it has achieved it's purpose. This film had a huge impact on me, it made me think for days...because that's what a good film does.

This just proves that the majority of "reviewers" are complete retards. The "1 star : too depressing" point is not strange, it is the mindset of an imbecile.

Agreed!

It's definitely not a "feel-good" movie, but what did they expect when they read the synopsis? I know a lot of people who claim they didn't like a film because it was too depressing/gloomy.

That being said, I loved the movie, but I couldn't watch it again. lol

SPOILERS***

The scene where all those people die of carbon monoxide poisoning really got me. Could you imagine being partially responsible for that?

reply

Dude, we live in a world where The Avengers is considered a good movie and Transformers makes more than a billion dollars. Do you expect anything more from our society? Everything in this day and age is apparently supposed to be a crowd-pleaser with a heavily likable character and a "YAY" happy ending. I know, idiots, but sadly, we can't do anything about it...

This movie made me so sad I cried when he tells Ana and they hug. Javier Bardem is an amazing actor. And it was shot so well...

Thats why I gave it a 10/10. Because the film successfully accomplished its goal. What a great movie

Great film! Not a happy one. Loved its complexity. It's willingness to not have a happy ending. I loved the bookends of the film when Bardem had the scene in the woods with his brother. There was something beyond cinematic. Something beyond theatre. It has stayed with me.

Bardem was brilliant in this film and redeems himself in a way that most films are afraid to touch.

I came to the imdb page of this movie after watching it and my jaw just dropped in disbelief when i saw it's rated just 7.5. It's one of the most thought provoking movies i have ever seen. Yes, it's terribly depressing, but that's what life is sometimes like. All the characters seem to have real lives with real problems, and they are not just caricatures of poor people like in most movies.

I am still trying to figure out, how Batman: The Dark Knight can possibly be rated 1 and a half stars higher than this movie.

reply

Not just sad, this movie disturbed me on a visceral level. I felt sick while watching it. It's also excellent. I probably won't watch it again, but I'll certainly recommend it to friends who can appreciate this type of film.

reply

It's actually just a vile movie, like a toilet POV film, nothing redeeming about it
