Why exactly were they living in a bunker anyway?

Humans have lived, thrived and survived for thousands of years in snow dominated regions of the earth.... so why were they hiding? Its not like it was a toxic or radiated environment like other post-apocalyptic films. There were whole cities to plunder and that's not including fishing under the rivers etc.

Also hiding your population from the cold naturally makes them susceptible to cold viruses, so its no wonder so many were dying. Again we are not talking about some alien virus..... the weak would have died off naturally and the 2nd to 3rd generation would have been fine.

Christ they didn't even have snow shoes! And why was everyone seemingly living in concrete, damp and cavernous factories/ industrial plants which would have been horrendously cold.

reply

My guess would be its way below freezing with the sun being blocked and it would be hard to make anything work or keep the place from being buried in snow. Underground would provide the best insulation. Plus you have the zombie/cannibals running around.

And the deeper you go (as with mines), the warmer it gets.

reply

But like I said - humans have survived for centuries in the cold. Its called adapting.

As for Depth......... they were not far down, just in a bunker , which was damp and wet making it cold. To get warm in amine you really do need to tavel down a fair bit That and they were all sick anyway!

So hiding in a cold bunker, not getting any Vitamin D from the sun (yes you still get it in the snow) and losing immunity to viruses in the upper world is the best way to go?

Besides, judging by the behaviour of Paxton and his supporters they were headed down the Cannibal path already.

That post completely lacks any logic.

First off Humans have not lived, thrived and survived in in environments were it is snowing 24/7/365 and where it is below 0 24/7/365. The closet land mass on Earth that in reality has those conditions is Antarctica and humans have never naturally lived there. What humans have done for hundreds of years is live in places where it has been cold for most or part of the year, but those areas did have a break in the cold that allowed them to grow and gather food and to get materials to build and repair shelters.

So the best bet for them in a situation where they don't have the materials to build shelters to protect them from the weather is to find a preexisting structure that will protect them, and an underground bunker is the best bet if you can find one. And in those conditions after a while there would be nothing to plunder, as they said in the movie once everything ran out in the cities people started flocking there, animals would just about be hunted out, and fishing would be out of the question because the rivers and lakes would have a very thick layer of Ice and any surviving fish would have gone to the very bottom to where it is warm and been out of reach to fish.

Secondly, hiding your population away from the cold doesn't make them more susceptible to cold viruses. Cold doesn't cause viruses. What cold does is weaken your immune system because your body has to use more energy to stay warm so it uses less energy maintaining your immune system. This is what makes you more susceptible to viruses and bacterial infections. So it would stand to reason that to keep from getting sick in an environment like they are in they need to stay warm and out of the cold. The one thing they would need to do is to keep it as dry as possible because many viruses and bacteria do spread in damp environments.

reply

They didn't just live there to stay warm. They stayed there and kept samples of wildlife, stock, cropts, bugs, foliage, etc and many other amenities they wouldn't have been able to keep alive outside in the snow. I am sure a lot of it was opportunity also and unimportant overall.

Their intentions were waiting for everything either to pass and/or someone to find a way to get the sun shining again.

Another example is the barbarians and Gauls that live in cold areas of Europe also known as the Ancient Germans, french tribes, and others, they would stay in their cold country durning spring and summer but when winter came, it would be too cold for any food, they could not grow crops and cannot hunt in the snow, did not speak many languages so their were many wars over food and supplies, until the romans came into power, and the romans never understood that the barbarians were fighting them for survival and the romans were fighting only for power that was a giant clusterfu*k and the romans lost everything after 500 years of rule.

But back to the movie, its snowed day and night, with no sun, it would be impossible for them to survive for long periods of time on the surface, for the same reason why today humans cannot survive living in the South Pole without massive amounts of supplies, even though their is sun light, humans would die out, hell even penguins knows in order to survive as a spices each female needs to have one baby per year until death, then the cycle is repeated

99% societies, countries on earth cannot survive without trade, bargaining or begging

The Galatians were not Germans. They were Celtic. The Germans were a lot of things, but never the Galatians.

Communications equipment, food stores, defensible, infrastructure to generate power and heat, living quarters.

The cities were full of plagues, violence and disease. Not much different from today really.

We can only assume that it was very cold and probably a very high chance of blizzards. You wouldn't make it very long on the surface in that type of climate. That's why humans don't live in that type of environment.

You don't get a disease from the cold weather. It's a virus has nothing to do with the weather. The problem with humans and winter is that once it's cold you stay inside with your family etc and that's how viruses spread.

I got the impression at least 20-25 years had past since the climate change. I'm sure they mentioned a specific date but who cares. The point is most humans died, the ones left were fighting over what was left. Basically your average apocalypse. In a sense the movie did that part fairly well. Without a society, laws and all that crap you have anarchy. The problem with our society is that it's so fragile and it doesn't take much for it break. When it happens and it always does, just a matter of time... it's just chaos. Think of it like a spring cleaning for the human race, much needed... especially now.

reply

I understand a lot of that......... yet hiding underground, you end up like the Monsters in the film or crazy like in A Boy and His Dog.

And again I am not saying build Igloos. But to virtually totally shut yourself off from the upper Earth seems insane.

reply

There is obviously some sunlight. I'd build greenhouses with large reflectors on the sides. It would be relatively warm inside.

It is incorrect that they would have to go very deep for a stable temperature. They need only be below the frost line and everything below that would be about 55-60F all year round.

Which brings up a fact, there would still be thermal venting all around the world. Thus there would be warm spots around the world.

I noticed the lack of snow shoes, that was a flaw. However your argument is ultimately invalid because no humans in history have ever lived in a place so cold with such sustained cold. Going underground was easier, and it's wrong to assume they never go above ground, since they occasionally visit other colonies, and probably scout for resources.

The frost line varies with latitude. The frost line is over five feet deep in Northern Minnesota and its above freezing continuously for 4-6 months a year. In this kind of "climate" (continuous, below-zero weather, no sun) the frost line could be a dozen or more feet and it could be dozens of feet to 55 degree temps.

My biggest question for this dumb movie is not why they lived inside, but how they got unlimited electricity inside?? was it a powerplant they where hiding in? no i dont think so...so where did the electricity come from? such a dumb retarded movie...that is the biggest plothole and question.

~If the realistic details fails, the movie fails~
