Does it create a plot hole?

When Paul and Jessica meet the skeptical Fremen on the rocks, why wouldn't Jessica or even Paul try using the Voice on them to get their cooperation? It seemed they didn't even think of trying it, despite just having used it in another situation.

reply

They are attempting to build diplomatic relations (based on trust and respect) with the Fremen. Using "the Voice" or any other method of power, force and control would destroy that. Based on my viewing, I gathered that "the Voice" was not to be used indiscriminately.

reply

Would still be more logical to get the ball rolling by making them feel friendly rather than outright killing a guy (who had no real reason to hate them anyway as he doesn't even know them).

reply

Yeah, lets force the Fremen to do what we want in the short term when the goal is a long term association. After it wears off and they realize what was done they'll just shrug their shoulders and call for a beer to celebrate the alliance.

reply

Why so negative? After it wears off they realize they've not stolen anything or harmed anyone, so why not accept them.

reply

Because people don't react that way. You force me to do something, regardless of how trivial or harmless it is, and you have made me an enemy. You showed me no respect or realization that I should make decisions on my own.

Now, before we start invoking laws, that is a bit different. Laws are part of the social contract we all enter into so that society can remain mostly civil. We're not talking about law here.

reply

I see you are not fully grasping the possibilities inherent in the Voice. They Voice them to forget they have been treated that way, hence they don't have that resentment.

reply

Ah, yes, a complete neophyte is going to control a dozen or more Fremen, force them to what he wants. Even Jessica is not going to be able to do that. And then you have the issue of the rest of the sietch believing that those individuals would act completely out of character.

I know you don't get it, but forcing someone you are trying to make an alliance with, especially when you have no real resources, is a spectacularly bad idea. It borders on the suicidal.

reply

And, btw, you are not considering that some people are resistant to the voice. That isn't going to help your credibility either.

reply

Again, too little imagination. They don't have to control all of them. The leader does that. They just need to influence the leader.

reply

Oh, yes, dozens of Fremen won't question why their leader is going against custom and practice. That won't lead to a challenge.

The issue is not that I have too little imagination. The problem is yours is not disciplined. Good writers let their imaginations go wild and then edit them down.

reply

You have too much imagination …

And it’s a VERY stupid idea ..
