Seasons 2 and 3, SPOILERS

I've just started watching season 3 and have a question. I only recently heard about this series (I'm from south of the boarder). Was Maury Chaykin having serious health problems before and during season 2? Did fans of the show know that at the time? I had only seen him in the Nero Wolfe series before this.
