Vancouver International Film Festival

"City of Life" had two sold-out screenings at VIFF in the past week and the audience loved the film. The stories are contemporary, the characters are interesting and the audience can relate to each one, and it shows a slice of live in Dubai, half a world away. After visiting the website and seeing the calibre of talented actors in this film from around the globe, I'm impressed that someone managed to get them all in the same film. A nice surprise was seeing actress Susan George at the beginning.
It's always refreshing to watch a film from others' perspectives (i.e., not Hollywood) and I've rarely been disappointed. Looking forward to seeing more from this director in the future.

Sorry Doc,

I was one of those people at one of the sold-out screenings, and don't mistake a sell-out with a film being popular. The audience left the theatre very disappointed. Some of the dialogue was laughably bad, many character motivations made no sense whatsoever, and whoever chose the music for the soundtrack.....just wow.

At one point, when the lead female character is on the bow of a boat crying, the blasting music actually said "Where am I now? I'm so freakin' Looooonnnnely."

The audience actually burst out laughing. And for some reason, half the characters in Dubai are fully trained in martial arts.

I have been to the film festival for 5 years, usually seeing 10 films per year. This was easily, the film that has most disappointed me.
