Richmond Medical Examiner?

The medical examiner in the Richmond episodes is named Dr. Deborah Kay. In Patricia Cornwell's crime novels based in Richmond the M.E. is named Dr. Kay Scarpetta. I read that Cornwell worked at a medical examiner's office in Virgina. Do the two real women know each other? Is the fictional woman have anything to do with real Dr. Kay?
