Is this normal?

I'm watching the first episode now, which is "Welcome to Homicide" and I'm just wondering if it is normal to for a lead investigator to be a rookie detective on his first murder case. Why isn't his partner, the veteran, the lead detective to show him the ropes?

Surely you wouldn't want a lead investigator who has never investigated a murder before. That would be kind of like promoting a Private all the way up to General in one day. ;)

Just to add to that, after a period of shadowing and working under various lead detectives. There has to be a time a Rookie has to stand up and take the lead on a case. Fact is in bigger Cities all detectives have more cases on the go than they know what to do with and all murder cases can't all be handled by veterans. Like you say, on their first case they'll be shadowed by an experienced head, just to point him in the right direction if needed. Even as lead detective, a Murder case is a massive team effort.
