'What the hell is wrong with deaf people?' to that and everyone else...

i am in a ASL class and my teacher has worked with deaf people for a very long time so listen to me when i say this.

Deafness is a culture, a very complex one. i mean you'd be surprised. So to deaf people, deafness is a Culture, a way of life. not a disability. they don't think something's wrong with them.

In this movie, adam is born hearing but becomes deaf. He's gone through alot with that between have to make new friends and learn a whole new language...

by the way, Sign language is an official language. and no, it's NOT just english ewith your hands. It has it's own gramatical structure and rules. Trust me, it is very difficult, more so than alot of other foreign languages.

anyway, his parent's didn't want him to feel like there was something wrong with him...

and you have to understand that all of this is in perspective. you may say there's something wrong with deaf people, but then you were probably never deaf or hard of hearing or knew someone who was deaf or hard of hearing and is ok with it.

so don't be insensitive. don't critisize or be rude cuz if u r ur bein ignorant.

Keeping someone deaf so that they can be part of your culture is sick. like the end of Freaks. "One of us ...one of us..."

What we have here is failure to communicate!

Ugh! He became deaf naturally, so there's nothing wrong with just letting things be the way that they are. Deaf people are content with being deaf. When you're content with being the way that you are, the thought of having an operation to implant something into your brain is unnecessary and horrifying. It's not like missing a leg, and using a prosthetic one so you can walk. Hearing people don't seem to understand that it's not the same thing b/c they don't consider themselves handicapped. If they don't think anything wrong, then why fix something that's not broken?

It's their choice, so why be so adamant about not letting them get their hearing back? Became deaf "naturally"? WTF does that mean? You can't get cured of something because you got it "naturally"? What about cancer?

What we have here is failure to communicate!

reply

Your problem is that you're comparing deafness to cancer. That is a stupid comparison. Deafness is not something that needs to be cured. It's something that can be embraced, and many deaf people choose to embrace it.

It's great for them to embrace it, but not to bully others into it.
