Was I the only one who didn't find this inspiring?

Okay, it was inspiring, but the emotion it most inspired in me was pity, just feeling sorry for these guys. Their sad refusal/inability to recognize the dream didn't work out for them was not an inspiring story; that, too, led mostly to pity.

Faith is a great thing, and they've clearly got it. I can see some glimmer of inspiration in that. But to keep going when your faith is consistently undermined over decades is just a sad thing to watch.

Hard rock is a young man's game. You look more and more pathetic when you're in your 40's, 50's, and 60's, and you're still trying to live out the dream. Some, like Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Metallica, can get away with it, because they built such a solid fan base when they were in their prime. But Anvil just looks ridiculous.

This was like a dark comedy in documentary form. "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans - Woody Allen."

I also found the whole thing pretty depressing. It's great to have a dream, but these guys are completely delusional. 30 years later they think that somehow they're going to become rock stars? It'll never happen, and they'll never admit that. Their families are the ones that end up suffering the most from it. Very sad.

I'm sorry, but I think you missed the point entirely.

The inspiration comes from the idea that these guys followed their passion where ever it would lead them. While not a commercial success, their lives are a success because they followed their dreams and never gave up at it. That is a success of it's own kind, however hokey that may seem. It's better to try and fail, and keep trying, than to never try at all.

The problem is I don't think they (esp lips) were happy with just that. Being a small band with a cult following that some people liked but most people didn't know. etc. They seemed to want to break into the mainstream. Problem is their music style is from the 80s, and it is 30 years later now.

Had they just enjoyed the ride so far and enjoyed the touring, or the fan base they do have that'd be great. But I got the impression they wanted to be bigger and it wasn't going to happen.

^Agreed. I think his brother talking about how he'd rather live in poverty, and the last bit of voiceover before the end credit hits, they're the most key to understanding the movie.

Hell no. Agree word-to-word. This movie left me dejected more than anything else.
