Lauren is the prime example of a kid that thinks he or she knows what's going on in the world and all about adult life, but when it smacks her in the face she runs away from it. We've all been there. We think we know all about life, but we don't, we can't. The teenager brain really does work differently from an adult brain, and that's not just some tired phrase, but neurologically true. What she should have really considered was that she wants to be open about loving another woman, but she joined the Army. Not exactly a bright move, even for a teenager. On top of that, she went AWOL and the epilogue refers to "disciplinary action". This is probably what we in the Army call "getting chaptered"; it means getting kicked out. I did not catch the date this was filmed, but judging from the uniforms, equipment, etc, I guess around the 2005-2006 time frame. At that point, a soldier had to be a REALLY BAD screw up to get kicked out. So, using that knowledge, she certainly had to keep that bad attitude she displayed in the film. The Army is not hard. People take care of you as a brand new private. If you get kicked out and end up working at a fast food chain, I can't really say that you're ever really going to be a pillar of society. I know that sounds cold, but for anyone that has been in the Army in this last decade, it is understandable. The Navy, Air Force, and Marines can kick people out, but the Army can't unless you're really a useless human being that is truly an oxygen thief.
