Federally mandated service that's not like the draft?

Did Ulsie say this or did I malconstrue or misheard?

As someone else on this board stated about lackluster crayons: I guess it takes a dull crayon to recruit even duller crayons. Ulsie makes a fitting green; a fitting, dull Army green. =) Least he's not eating crayons, thank goodness though.

I take it back however if it is a mistake of interpretation on my behalf.

In many countries all men are required to serve a certain number of years in the military -- maybe that's what he meant, that he would like a federal mandate to serve in the military for some length of time, war time or not.

reply

yeah that is pretty much what he said. I myself think it is a dumb idea. Not everybody could be a doctor or engineer so why could everybody be a soldier? People have different skills and abilities and should be allowed to exercise their free will to use their abilites to the better society.

I don't believe that he meant everyone would have to be a soldier. He meant that everyone should have to spend some period of their lives (presumably a year or two), "giving something back" to the USA, in exchange for the freedoms and standard of living we enjoy.

This could probably be done in hundreds of different ways - charity work, teaching, construction of public projects, volunteering in schools or hospitals, or other civil service type jobs. Perhaps for bigger sacrifices (like soldiering) the amount of service time required would be shorter.

He said that and I disagree with him. I guess he forgets that some people are against killing - if we continue to have people like Bush for president, then the military service should be 100% optional. Also, servicemen should be allowed to leave whenever they want.

It's one think to join the service to defend your country and freedom, it's another thing to attack and pillage weaker countries.

If we were all about protection of weaker countries, why did the US turn a blind eye to Rwanda and now Darfur? Why invade a country where people are allowed to live and work(the conditions might be strict, but look at N. Korea, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia) and stand back and do nothing when hundreds of thousands of innocent children are being savagely murdered every day?

When you have a country where skulls and human bones are as common on the streets as cigarette butts AND people do absolutely nothing to stop it, that's a crime against humanity.

Badjuju,

You're beyond naive. Since the beginning of time people have been killing each other, and that will never change. The species that refuse to kill, usually are the killed. Look at nature!

I believe all men who are able should be required 2 years service in the military branch of their aptitude. This would rid the U.S. of the liberal disease that is spreading.

"The liberal disease that's spreading"

Do you mean information. Some new studies suggest that liberals are actually more informed on the issues and have a better understanding of them. The study also said that the results typically showed that liberals had a higher average IQ.

It could be that easier access to the internet equals a faster flow of information. This could be the cause of the "Liberal Disease"

If you want to end the liberal disease you might want to lobby congress to ban books and the internet. That would probably slow the disease a little faster. We would be more like a communist country though.

Republicans are getting worried now because more and more people are leaving the republican party. I think the main cause for this is the generational gap. The die-hard morally righteous republicans are turning off the potential young republicans. Many young republicans are more fiscally conservative than morally and issues like Gay Marriage, War on Marijuana and Abortion are issues that they are a bit more sympathetic too. We are finding out every day the that many of the ways the republicans handle these issues are creating more problems than they solve.
