for example, they trot along a little path letting huge objects knock them off, and all they'd have to do is crouch a bit and the objects would pass harmlessly overhead. And every contestant it seems is equally clueless.
I guess they can't see what previous people do, at least some of the time, 'cause they sure don't learn anything from previous mistakes.

The whole point is that they don't know those things are coming. Although, the duplicate ones you would think they would look out for especially if they're a fan of the show like some of them say.
shareI don't think they get to watch the other contestants watch the preliminary before they go. I also think the season is done filming before an episode airs, so if you did go on, all the obstacles would be updated for the new season, and no one would have seen them yet, except the big balls, of course.
But I could be wrong, for sure.

The rules actually forbid ducking under certain obstacles (usually including anything that spins in the Wipeout Zone, & absolutely everything on the Sweeper round).
