What a load of crap! Two hours of rich "Celebrities" complaining about how it sucks to live in the greatest country on Earth.

reply

I Agree 100% they found every anti-Establishment letter from the last 500 years, where are the letters from everyday Americans throughout history?

And what is the BS about western expansion being only good for the rich people? I seem to recall everyday non wealthy people going west and staking land claims, yes a free homestead courtesy of the government.

This is a load of crap sure these people throughout history have had trouble, yes slavery was bad, same with a segregated south, unscrupulous employers of the late 19th century were bad yes. Where are the letters from those Americans who have historically started with their bare hands and a lot of hard work and built something great.

If you don't like this country leave, the majority of us love it here I know my family has since the 1600's

Women's suffrage and civil right doesn't count because...?

reply

"Where are the letters from those Americans who have historically started with their bare hands and a lot of hard work and built something great."

A myth, starting with our agriculture. The agriculture of the this country is the result of central government policy. First, clearing the land of the original inhabitants. Followed by giving the land away and heavily subsidizing farmers.

Something great was definitely built, but it all was the direct result of the destruction of the American Indian population by a powerful central government and central government agricultural and industrial policies.

reply

"And what is the BS about western expansion being only good for the rich people? I seem to recall everyday non wealthy people going west and staking land claims, yes a free homestead courtesy of the government."

Yes, land "claims" made on land that was cleared of its original inhabitants during the genocide of the indigenous population. Also, the remaining survivors among the American Indian population were rounded up into concentration camps, euphemistically called "reservations".

This might very well have been the biggest government program in the nation's history. It had nothing to do with the mythological "free market". It was all the result of central government agricultural policy. "Free" land, and plenty of government subsidies to start up and maintain new farms.

"Little House On The Prairie" didn't just sprout up out of nowhere from the toil of hard working salt of the earth people. Direct beneficiaries of this central government agricultural policy, like committed libertarian myth maker Rose Wilder, daughter of "Little House" author Laura Ingalls, would like for us to believe "Little House" was the result of a bunch of heroic entrepreneurs.

Americans who benefit from government policy and become rich because of it like to pretend that they did it all by themselves, when nothing could be further from the truth.

Where do you get the farfetched idea that we are the "greatest country on earth?" Thats a ridiculous statement and only serves to highlight your ignorance.

reply

The idea came from the fact that this is the greatest country on earth. Thats why people from all over the world risk their lives to come here and yet they still spit on us. Just out of curiosity aclark3-1, where are you from?

reply

Ha. Im from the US. But Im not an arrogant prick and know that we have many shortcomings. And how old are you buddy? Cause I dont think Ive presumed to live in the best country since I was in about 5th grade. We just arent the best anymore. This isnt the 40s pal. Wake up. We have a lot to do as a country before we can even approach labeling ourselves the greatest on earth. Thats such an arrogant title and just makes the US look bad to the rest of the world. If you are in fact an adult, dlevb31, you are the kind of person that the rest of the world despises us for. Arrogant and ignorant. Thats what you make our nation look like.

reply

Just out of curiosity, Mr. Genius. Who is the greatest and have you researched their entire history under your microscope?

reply

Its impossible to determine what country is the greatest because thats a subjective term. I tend to think there are lots of different countries but no one is the best. Some countries are better than others at specific things while they might be worse at others. Its just a ridiculous question.

Whats funny about people like you that proclaim the US is the greatest is that you are part of the ignorant masses who know nothing about the issues or how the world works. See when you accomplish stuff without calling yourself the greatest, thats when you get respect. You conservatives need to start listening to one of your own, Teddy Roosevelt, who once said, "Speak softly, but carry a big stick."

reply

You sound like a 12 year old, just ripe for the pickin' by Granpa Zinn.

When you grow up you will realize that you can put the history of any country under the microscope and you will come up with as bad or worse than the United States.

You are right, it is a ridiculous question, and it's equally ridiculous to hate the United States for no apparent reason other than that it's currently trendy to do so.

reply

So when did dissent become hate? I do not hate my country. I know that Im lucky to call myself an American. But that doesnt mean I cant say bad things about it. You so called "patriots" who proclaim that the US is the greatest country and the liberals are attacking our morals or whatnot, are the opposite of patriots. You are hurting the country with your ignorance.

I agree that most other countries have just as bad if not worse histories as we do but that doesnt mean we shouldnt strive to do better. Shows like this arent here to push an ideology on you. They hold a mirror to the country so we can see our inadequacies and improve on them. These things they talk about in the show are things that happened, whether you like it or not. Forgetting our past is not the way to move into the future. Doing that is assuring our self-destruction.

As for you thinking Im a 12 year old, what exactly did I say that makes you think Im 12? Did I accidentally let slip about all the cooties I got the other day?

I am the master of my fate.

reply

Let's see. The very first thing in the show was Damon reading from the Declaration of Independence and highlighting that people should replace the Government. I can't imagine how I got the idea that the show was about an ideology? Of course they are trying to push an ideology. Give me a break.

You just sound like you have not really thought any of this through. I'm old enough to have actually been taught all of the history that Zinn rambles on about as being false. People were able to figure out for themselves that everything we were taught was not true. Revising history a complete 180 degrees is not the solution.

Of course we should strive to do better, and that's exactly my problem with Zinn's revisionist history. He acts as if he just discovered all of this and we are still living in the 1950s. Well he is old, but if he just looked around he would see that we have done better. We do better every generation. That's the entire idea of America. That's what makes it so great.

And I do believe you have cooties too.

reply

Excuse me, it's not here to push an ideology? Howard Zinn believes that the entire history of the country has been a conspiracy where the Founding Fathers conspired to lord it over the little people. That's not ideology? Another thing, the name is inspired by communist titles such as "The People's Army." Oh no, there's no ideology there. Brother.

reply

So anything that uses the words "the people" is communist?
You people really have no shame, do you?

I think in Obama's case that would be "speak softly and carry a lapdog."

reply

heheh I"m from Canada, eh, and I find it hilarious how BOTH darogr & aclark show the worst side of America. The one shouting we're number 1, and the other just can't help but tear him down and say how crappy the US is....I've lived next door to you guys for over 40 years and I LOVE THE USA!!!!! But we canadians are a modest people, so when yanks shout 'we're the best country in the world" we roll our collective eyes a bit. But by the same token, that LOVE OF COUNTRY is one of things we admire about you. We love Canada, but you don't see people tearing up over the national anthem at a hockey game (unless it's the olympics of course). We dig that about you. We also know that to many people all over the globe, the only escape, the only shining light in the world, is to make it to the US and carve out a life for themselves and live the american dream - whether that's an antiquated notion to some, it still holds true all over the world. as a side bar, i found this film self-indulgent nonsense, gah, it was insufferable!!

reply

I believe we are the greatest country on earth because of the obvious blessings that God has bestowed on us. Maybe you don't believe in God. I won't argue with you then. I'm curious though. If we aren't the greatest, then what America-hating leftist country would you nominate?

reply

ha! very funny... i go out of my way NOT to go to the US, even though it would greatly help my career (and i bet that you would say that that's a good thing because you wouldn't want "people like me" anyway). way too much ignorance that is reflected in politics (or manipulative politics that are reflected in the ignorance of the people?).

and even though it's somewhat similar in the whole western world (i don't "spit on" any country in particular but ignorance in general - no matter where i live. that's a main difference between liberals and conservatives... liberals criticize wrong things, no matter what their own connection is), the US right now seems to be in the lead in terms of greed and hate. i really pity the liberal people living there who have to put up with all that right-wing nonsense.
once the right takes over completely (it basically already has but i'm talking about radically... taking away the last civil liberties), guess who'll come whining because they have no freedom left and nothing to eat... the excuse of "terrorism" will last for only so long.

I totally agree! If you will look at the cast, it reads like a who's who of the hollywood left. I caught part of this left-wing trailer trash expose and as an instructor in American History I can tell you it should be relegated to the garbage can where it rightfully belongs! No one should be surprised however at this leftist attempt to degrade the United States, as they have been doing it for years! I wish all of them could have lived in Russia during the days of Stalin! I would loved to have seen them do an unflattering portrayal of Soviet history at that time of Stalin and have to wonder how he would have reacted. The lucky ones would have been eliminated on the spot and the survivors sent to a concentration camp. The material on which this historical (or hysterical) monstrosity is based comes from the mind of an avowed socialist! No wonder! What a joke! If this is the History Channel's idea of objective portrayal of American History, then the American people need a new History Channel!!!

reply

America is indeed the greatest country, what with its low educational ranking and 13th on the HDI rankings. I guess this is the greatest country in the world if you are upper middle class or plain old upper class. However, if you are a worker, you're ****ed.

Also, I'm rather interested in hearing your rightist reasoning for why we are somehow the world's greatest country.

reply

I think you guys are a little confused on the subject. Obviously it's an opinion to say that this is the greatest country in the world. Any time you say something is the greatest it's an opinion. As Americans you should have a lot more pride in your country. Whether it's true or not you should always think this is the greatest country. I have no problem with discussing the flaws in the government; I do it all the time. I just wish liberals would stop saying how much they love this country and then begin an endless tirade on how evil America is. Just be a little honest for once and admit you people hate this country. You are all self hating Americans. I am so sick of hearing liberals excuse this behavior by claiming they are the true patriots because they can recognize America's flaws. That's complete bs. It's nothing more than hate. And to onehandedtyr-1, I think it's funny you bring up education considering that when our country was more conservative we had one of the best education systems in the world and as soon as the baby boomers got out of college they went into education and government and now we have one of the worst. And as far as the class structure is concerned you need to understand that that has nothing to do with America, that's a problem that has occured in every culture of every nation for the entire span of human existence and it will never change.

reply

As Americans you should have a lot more pride in your country. Whether it's true or not you should always think this is the greatest country.

So you want every American to lie to themselves? Hmmm... so forget about grasping reality and improving on it, we should instead be complacent and not progress (a naughty word to you conservatives) as a society? Thats the vibe I get from that statement whether thats what you meant or not and thats a scary mentality to have.

I just wish liberals would stop saying how much they love this country and then begin an endless tirade on how evil America is. Just be a little honest for once and admit you people hate this country.

See, what you dont get is that we dont think this country is evil. Sure some evil things have occurred and we have committed evil acts, but that doesnt make the country on the whole evil. See we see the flaws in our country and strive to improve on them so we can actually BECOME the greatest country that conservatives think we already are.

And no I dont hate the country. I just hate the faux-patriotic, ignorant, racist, fearmongerers that have become all too common in the right hand portion of our political system.

I am so sick of hearing liberals excuse this behavior by claiming they are the true patriots because they can recognize America's flaws. That's complete bs. It's nothing more than hate.

So when you recognize Americas flaws, as you stated earlier in the same post, its patriotic. Yet when we recognize flaws, its hate? Thats the definition of a double standard dumbass. You arent even trying to sound credible are you?

I'm not saying I want every American to be ignorant to the problems in this country. I'm saying as an American you should be proud of your country and know that this is this best, not perfect but the best. I'd like to know what country you think is the best. I wrote in my previous post that I understand that that's nothing more than an opinion and right now I'm asking for your opinion. As far as "progress" being a dirty word I think the problem is that people on the left don't want to promote progress they want to promote a complete and total social change. That's a bit of a cliché with the current administration but it's true. Just look up Obama's mentor Saul Alinsky and see what his idea of progress was. I've spoken to friends of mine who are liberal and I've read many of the posts on here and I don't think these people love their country. The question becomes can you still call this the same country if you change the entire social structure of it? I really resent your comments that the right is full of ignorant racists. That's a common defense from the left, when you can't prove them wrong just call them racist or say they're fearmongerers and vilify their opinions. Do you have any opinions of your own or are you just another liberal puppet without the ability of free thought? You people are told how to think and how to act. I can see it is your comments, it sounds just like every other lefty on these boards. By the way I never insulted you so you can stop with the name calling.

reply

You pretty much nailed it dlevb31, but I'm not so sure about the education thing. The leftists have been running the schools that hand out education certificates for decades. Every single one of these schools should be denied public funding simply on the basis of national security.

reply

"Pride in your Country".

I find it disgusting that people in this day and age still proudly hold on to "Patriotism".

Patriotism is the greatest tool in any governments arsenal. Congratulations your a patriot... Now that your proud you can continue sucking the giant tits of propaganda feed to you by whatever county you have been indoctrinated to think is the "greatest of nations".

You must stop and think if you were born in any country, you would have to fight the indoctrination that it's the greatest nation, that you are better in someway or another than other peoples in other countries.

You are not. "Your" country is not. Your "religion" is not...

We are all basically the same, that's *beep* science.

Come ON people use some *beep* logic and critical thinking.

reply

You obviously didn't watch it. Those "rich celebrities" were reading letters written by average Americans fighting for equal rights, equal pay, and equal treatment, clear back to the soldiers fighting under General Washington in the American Revolution. If not for people brave enough to speak out, we'd still be a British colony. It's people like you that really need to watch this, but won't because you're convinced you already know everything anyway, and are content to keep drinking the Kool-Aid.

reply

I really don't mean to insult you but are you *beep* stupid? You say I drink the kool-aid like I'm the one in a cult? I don't see how you can say that considering liberals like the ones on this program have had such an influence on you that you actually hate your own country. I did watch this and all I saw was liberal propaganda. If you look for all the bad things in this country you're going to find a lot, but it's very biased to not mention all the great things about this country. And that's what liberals like to do, they list everything wrong with America and never focus on the good, and believe me if you can't see that there is so much more good than bad I really don't think you should stay. There was so much in this "documentary" that was misleading. The part about the soldier from Washington's army complaining was the best. If you spent any time in the military you would know that officers always receive more than the enlisted. It's always been that way as it should be. Should an office manager receive the same benefits as the copy boy? I don't think so. Try to look at this country as your family. You see flaws many times but despite all the problems you still love them and if you hear someone insult your family or attack them you stand up for them and you fight to defend them. Using that analogy, liberals are like a teenage girl who is angry at her parents for not getting her a car. Grow up.

reply

dlevb,

Stop getting all your "information" from FOX news please. If you don't want to watch a show about the role minorities/people played in the founding of our country then fine. But for you, and your FOX watching brethern, to accuse others of being biased is beyond pathetic.

I wouldn't mind conservatives so much if they weren't such obvious hypocrites.

reply

Oh, I love this. Conservatives are hypocrites? Do you realize that Howard Zinn is a marxist? Are you a marxist? This country was not founded on marxism. And guess what pal? All the lefties in the demoRat party are going to get thrown out on their tails next year, because, wouldn't you know it, American's have a deep-seated loathing of socialism, even if the rotten education system in this country has failed to educate them about what it is.

reply

armouredway, sir, do you even know what a fu%%ing Marxist is? He's not a Marxist, you are an idiot.

People aren't Marxists just because they disagree with you. Marxism isn't an insult, it's an actual thing you moron.

P.S. Keep dreaming about next year. I know you brain-dead FOX news watching CONServatives like to pretend that you are going to win something, but with your 21% approval rating I doubt it. Lying has become so second natured for Republicans that now they are lying to themselves. So far this year Democrats have won three Congressional races to the GOP's one (even though two districts were held by Republicans and two by Democrats when the elections were called, thus meaning you actually lost one). But, nevertheless, I will enjoy watching your whole world fall apart when Democrats hold on to their majorities.

Thanks for playing...

I think it is safe to say you "jackbourassa" were completely wrong. Democrats did not hold their majorities in Congress, they got trounced and thrown the hell out in historical numbers. Republicans now control The House with a huge majority due to voters voicing their dissatisfaction with this current administration. Democrats lost Senate seats too but managed to keep a very small majority due to some awful Republican candidates. The American people on Nov2 showed they do not like Obama's/Pelosi's far left liberal ideals and what they are trying to do to this country and are not at all happy with the little that they have accomplished. You can bash Fox, the tea party, and conservatives all you want but they have informed and listened to the American people and kept Obama and Pelosi and the liberal media in check from getting away with what they want and totally ruining this country and following failed socialist policies of Europe which is in even a bigger mess then the US.

I also completely agree with the title of this thread. I saw part of this liberal propaganda drivel and could not believe how biased and pathetic it was and all these rich hypocritical liberal actors who feel a little guilty about being paid and pampered so much had the nerve to come out and do this. They need to get out of their elitist rich social circles of New York and Los Angeles and realize most of the country is pretty conservative and proud of their country and do not agree with them or their silly liberal America hating lets totally change it agenda.

Before you can claim that something is the best, you really ought to define the metrics you are using to make this evaluation. America is definitely the best by some metrics (e.g. GDP). It definitely is not the best according to other metrics (e.g. prisoners per capita) (just two pick two stats off the top of my head). So you should detail your assertion more.

More generally, being the best does not mean that you cannot continue to improve yourself (equivalently, that there is nothing more to complain about). Indeed, failing to continue to improve yourself upon becoming the best is known as 'resting on one's laurels', 'complacency', and 'stagnation'.
