Dumb Ignorant White Males

Rather than respond to so many ignorant remarks, I chose to start a new thread. First off, Mr. Damon's documentary showed his ignorance by choosing rich folks to "perform" the words of those of us who work for a living. Secondly, I'd like to reinforce the idea that we, the people, are the government. If the government fails, we fail. Man up.

As far as Howard Zinn goes, you people need to get a strong grip on reality. It is documented that Columbus was a bastard. Rape, abuse and slavery is not okay no matter when it took place. The evidence is in his own diaries. White colonization has been prevalent throughout history. Our Native American genocide can not be denied.

Time to admit white males have committed atrocious crimes and continue to do so. I truly hope poor whites, blacks and others decide to take their money back. Corporations are killing us. The goal of a corporation is o make as much money as possible.n The way they do that is to cut as many jobs as possible or send them overseas.

WAKE UP! MAKE CHANGE!

Each individual tries to pursue his or her interests to the best of his or her ability (with said ability defined by both physical and social constraints). This is not some battle between some fixed group of 'Strong' against some fixed group of 'Weak'. In any given interaction (and that includes the next time you go hang out with your friends) the stronger party will effectively abuse the weaker party to the extent congruent with the stronger party's interests (including considerations of the social costs potentially incurred at the discovery of this abuse by a third party).

The atrocious crimes you allude to are not the dastardly malpractice of some evil individuals fundamentally different from the rest of us. They are a manifestation of the intrinsic human nature we all share and express. That the range of manifestation goes from 'mostly harmless' to 'unforgivably atrocious' is a function of circumstance. The unforgivably atrocious manifestations must certainly be condemned, but we should never forget that our own actions differ from them in degree, not in kind. Put otherwise, every human being tries to do the right thing. The abuse and the suffering just stems from the fact the concept of the right thing differs from person to person (and indeed, even within one person differs from one point in time to another).

One of those most eloquent comments I've ever read on this board. Kudos :)

Rei t and lil dave, excellent, thank you.

People try and condemn the white male as if he alone were the bearer of all human ills and somehow stands out among all people as if he were unique, an alien on this planet. Which is, of course, total bollocks. Even a cursory reading of human history will show that the traits ascribed to the "white male" reside in all humans of all races and ethnicities, and given enough power over others, any group of people will behave in any number of ways including - but not limited to - enslavement and rape and murder.

Just as an example: Before the Aztecs were conquered, they were conquerors. Cortez did not wipe them out by himself with his small band of Spanish sailors, he had the help of at least 30 thousand local Indians who had themselves been brutally subdued by the Aztecs and forced to pay human tribute to them each year. These captive people were forced to give members of their own tribes to the Aztecs for the purpose of sacrifice in the temple slaughterhouses to appease the Aztec gods. Were the Aztecs "white males"?

This process of conquest and enslavement, rape and murder, has been re-enacted throughout human history and shows no sign of stopping anytime soon.

Give a group of humans, from any race or creed, power over any other class of humans, and those in power *will* attempt to increase their position by abusing the powerless. Happened (and is happening now) on *every* continent, by every race, since the emergence of human civilization.

So stop with the white male guilt already.

To be fair, the makers of the film might have thought that having big name actors would attract more viewers. I thought that the actors did a pretty good job.
