Is this a first?

This is apparently a remake of the 2004 film Cellular that stars Kim Basinger and Chris Evans. Is this the first case of a Hollywood film remade by Hong Kong, or has it occurred before?

That's what i was thinking at first too.
It's good to see that the US aren't the only who does remakes.

One thing good is that this film doesn't try to hide the fact that it is a remake of Cellular. The Departed really does and that is why I loathed that film for a very long time. Scorsese wanted to call it an inspiration while the Americans couldn't get their basic research right and called IA a Japanese film. Worst case, TD doesn't give credit to IA until towards the end of the credits. This is the reason why some people never knew that TD was a ripoff of IA. I'm glad they never went with a TD sequel.

This is likely to be one of the earlier ones.

Here's a few Asian remakes of Hollywood films.

1. Blood Simple → A Woman, A Gun and a Noodle Shop - Chinese
2. What Women Want → What Women Want - Chinese
3. Sideways → Saidoweizu - Japanese
4. The Italian Job → Players - Indian*
5. Knight and Day → Bang Bang - Indian*
6. Unforgiven → Yurusarezaru mono - Japanese

* Bollywood has remade quite a few Hollywood productions.🐭

I'd guess not. I can't think of an OFFICIAL remake off the top of my head, but Chow Yun-Fat's Full Contact is pretty much copied from Lee Marvin's Point Blank.

This is a remake of Cellular. It's not a bad movie, but of course, there are things of the original that are better and vice versa.

it's like the reverse of infernal affairs/the departed.

although i have to say that in both cases, the hong kong one is better.
