This sounds more like Edgar Rice Burroughs to me.

No, it really was Jules Verne.
There is even a couple references to Journey to the Center of the Earth in Back to the Future III when Doc Brown is talking about Jules Verne being his favorite author.

Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote the Pellucidar series, the ones that started with "At the Earth's core". Same basic idea, only they drilled down with an "iron mole" rather than finding a volcanic vent in Iceland. It was made into a film in the 70s with Peter Cushing and Doug McClure
