richard d.'s accent

What is up with the accent? Sounds like a cross between New England/Irish/English/Pirate. And he was mumbling; I couldn't understand him half the time.

I understood him fairly well. But I have watched it maybe 10 times of more.

I assumed it was an attempt to mix several accents, since he claimed he had been at sea from most of his life and would likely have mixed with a diverse group of people and have been exposed to many dialects. It seemed to me to be exactly the way a person with that background and job would talk. Why assume everyone talks clearly all the time? I know lots of people who mumble.

His "mumbling" and odd accent is part of what makes the movie enjoyable to me.

Hey Lucy,

I tend to agree with Rizdek. I thought Dreyfuss sounded just like I would expect him to sound, and I enjoyed his affectation of same. As far as his mumbling, I did not notice it, and I am one who usually gets very upset with actors mumbling their lines. I just did not notice it with Dreyfuss. If one wants to hear an actor with some real problems with his mumbling, try listening to most of Marlon Brando's work. I always had trouble understanding Brando.

Best wishes,

I thought he was imitating Robin Williams in Popeye. Not just in accent. I quit it, did Olive Oil ever show up?
