King's song

I have a question about the song that the King plays and sings so beautifully. I am quite familiar with folk songs and I know most of them do not make sense, however...

I get the part that he went into the flower shop and the shop owner grabbed him by the wrist and if a word got out, it must have been a shop assistant...

But the last verse "I need to go sleep there now" makes me totally confused. I feel I am missing something.

Could anybody please explain the meaning of this song?

Was it a female song sung by a male king?
