Lance Hammer is an inspiration.

For helming one of the most acclaimed films of the year.
For making cinematic choices that are challenging rather than necessarily commercial.
And most of all for taking the less-traveled path of self-distribution.

This guy has guts and courage, and we're lucky to have him making films.

I don't know if he's paying for the prints himself, but he is not going with a traditional distributor. Even though there was substantial interest from distributors.

In true independent fashion, he just felt that he could get his movie out there more and possibly even make more money from it if he did it himself.

There could have been 30-40 minutes shaved off the back end (which looped back on itself in a rather dreary fashion) and then should have expanded one of the beginning or middle scenes with 10 minutes of bugger.

The second those trains passed that kid (after they decide to home school him) it should have ended.

It was perfect otherwise in my opinion. Is it that far from works like David Gordon Green and the latest 'Shotgun Stories'?

He's also a hero for shooting on 35mm film, & not some crappy digital format.

Then again, ALL movies shot on any digital format look like crap.

reply

it is heroic to shoot in 35mm instead of digital?? for most of the indie filmmakers, it is not a choice but financial necessity to use digital. there is nothing 'heroic' for using 35mm.

reply

"Then again, ALL movies shot on any digital format look like crap" you have NO idea what are you talking about.

it would be more accurate to say that you are full of crap

I've met him too, and I don't think he was a jerk at all. He was maybe a bit timid, but far from a pompous a-hole. When I think of jerk filmmakers, I think of Tarantino, Brett Ratner, (supposedly) PT Anderson - although he's talented enough that he can get away with it in my opinion. This guy seemed like the kindest guy. Where did you bump into him? After a screening? Cause that's not the best atmosphere to meet a filmmaker. I much prefer panels and master-classes.

reply

I met him and sat through a lengthy Q&A with him as well, and I found that he was totally humble and a very nice, quiet guy.

reply

Um, no we're not. Are you joking? Nothing happens in this movie. Seriously, nothing happens in it. Whatever action takes place occurs offscreen. This is perhaps the most boring film that has ever been made in the history of cinema. Why anyone would actually care about the people in this film is beyond me. You could not be more wrong.

reply

True, not many people care about the lives of poor black folks. Thank God you are here to remind us, lest we forget.
