Does anyone know what events they are talking about when they say this is based on actual events?
The film was ok . . . I'm not complaining, just wondering.
Maybe they are referring to WWII in general.

This type of theft definitely occurred but it's unlikely that anyone had the former Imperial jewels of the German empire. I've heard that a lot of high ranking American military personnel did some thieving.
shareThe movie was based on the theft of the Hesse crown jewels from what is today Schlosshotel Kronberg. Germany as a whole never had any jewels, each state had them.

Billy Zane did a similar film called "The Last Drop (2006)", it was about Nazi gold, though.
I think that, too, was loosely based on a " true event".
