why would kelly lie about being intersexed?

she says on the commentary that she actually was born a man and is not intersex, and apologizes for lying to sean (the director) and the audience, but it kind of baffles me as to why she would make something like that up. i mean, i suppose maybe she's ashamed of being a transexual and isn't happy with the way she looks, but the fact that she talked about how she gets a period every month when it was completely untrue just seems ridiculous.

i mean, yes, obviously she has some severe mental issues that possibly stem from her bicycle accident, but she repeatedly lies throughout the film about her sex, about her age, and about other more trivial things. jeff is a kook, to be sure, but at least he's gregarious and goofy and somewhat sympathetic. even tiffany seems to put up with him for the most part, at least in small doses.

in the commentary kelly talks about how insane she thinks jeff is, but seems to completely lack any kind of self-awareness in regards to how poorly she comes off to the average viewer, especially if they listen to the commentary and find out she was lying repeatedly. i wish her the best, and i hope she finds love and happiness in her life. i just found her to be dishonest and pretty unlikable in the film, and that's even after the director said he cut out a lot of the REALLY bad stuff.

interesting film though. it's rare to see a documentary that focuses on people like kelly and jeff, even if it borders on being exploitative because they really don't seem to have any self-awareness whatsoever.
