Ugly girl, hot guy?

Such a typical ugly guy hotter girl situation. It would have been so much more interesting if they made a hot guy fall in love with an uglier girl!

reply

That's the movie, Penelope. Okay, he wasn't exactly hot (James McAvoy), but he was okay-looking, and she had a pig nose. It was an adorable movie.

reply

You should watch Shallow Hal.

reply

He wasn't really ugly, though. Just heavily tattooed.

reply

I came on here to post something very similar. Hollywood rarely makes movies where the ugly girl gets the hot guy. Shallow Hal doesn't count because he THINKS she's hot the whole time. And Jack Black isn't hot! So two strikes.

The whole Beauty and the Beast premise, while attempting to seem "life lessony", isn't necessarily sending the best message in my opinion. Because hot girls don't typically choose cranky, ugly men. It's just not the way things go.

Sexual attractiveness and looks playsmore of a role in male attraction.

In our feminist culture, women are confused on this point. But the bottom line is men need to be sexually attracted to women and looks has alot to do with it.

So really Beauty and the Beast isn't unrealistic. And women all know this otherwise they wouldn't put so much energy into their looks.

That a man would be attracted to a ugly woman is not believeable on screen.

That's why Shallow Hal's very premise fell flat, they were forced to use pretty people to convey the characters inner attractiveness. They couldn't do it through acting alone.

reply

And here's another interesting fact. Women currently like men who are slightly feminized, Zac Efron, Brad Pitt and Dicaprio types.

So if the beauty and the beast tale was inverted. The male 'beauty' would be this sensitive nice guy, while the female would be both physically ugly and have a bad personality. Which actually sounds like a pretty good basis for a story.

The now uglified biatch is redeemd by living with this 'nice guy' beauty. My question is would women actually respond to this? Wouldn't they be rooting for the nice guy to escape his imprisonment and hook up with a nice girl like them? It sounds more like a guy movie, they would be paying attention on how this nice guy tames this girl.

reply

As someone who's never paid much attention to the sexual dynamics of the whole "Beauty and the Beast" legend (I had to be DRAGGED to the stage show in London, and snoozed through it - even the chandelier thing is overrated), I can see a well-written, contemporary role reversal examining modern sexual dynamics (NOT "Shallow Hal," which doesn't count AT ALL in this scenario) that was unafraid to tell the truth being very interesting. Thank God I'm past all that.
But. . . Brad Pitt is considered "slightly feminized" now? That's a new one. Zac and Leo I can see (Zac wears more makeup than my wife), but . . . they appeal mostly to the Clearasil crowd - that likes pale, shirtless pretty boy vampires in frilly shirts and velvet overcoats. But Brad? Really? Blasphemy! LOL - WTH DO young women want? (See why it would be interesting?) I suppose you have to be Harrison Ford or Burt Reynolds now to be considered a "manly man."

No. No we're not, actually. But thanks for trying to understand "feminism".

And no one has still really named a movie where an unattractive girl gets a hot guy.

I think Sixteen Candles is a pretty valid example. Come on let's be real about this.

I always thought Janeane Garofalo in "The Truth About Cats & Dogs" was more attractive than Uma Thurman. I was always perplexed about why everyone was gaga over Uma in that movie. Now Uma CAN be very attractive at times, but generally I don't think she's nearly as good looking as people make her out to be, and especially not in that movie.

what about the twilight saga? kristen stewart isn't exactly what i would like to call hot... she looks like she got hit by a bat right in the face....

Hairspray?
Although she wasn't bad looking either.

It's the question that drives us. I know the answer is 42.

Well, in the book Divergent, Tris isn't supposed to be pretty, really. I'm trying to decide whether or not I think the actress playing her is gorgeous or boring, but she and the marvelously attractive Four do fall for each other. By the way, I haven't gotten the second book read, so if you have, do not spoil anything for me. Thanks.

It's a faaaar stretch, but in Welcome to the Dollhouse the bully guy became attracted to the main character and she wasn't very attractive.

I've never fooled anyone. I've let people fool themselves.

reply

Bridget Jones is supposed to be an unattractive woman who gets not one but two supposedly hot guys.

I mean, that's what the movie is about, whether we find Colin Firth and Hugh Grant attractive is another topic, right?

reply

"And no one has still really named a movie where an unattractive girl gets a hot guy."

---------

Like someone said earlier, Hairspray. And the hot guy falls for the nerdy, plain girl in A Walk to Remember.

reply

You didn't agree with the Bridgette Jones offering?

CiCi: Oh, my bad. I thought you were someone else.
GHostface: That's OK, I am

reply

Yeah but it's Mandy Moore. Are we really going to argue that Mandy Moore is unattractive? That's on par with saying She's All That counts because the plot of the movie hinges on the main female character being a disaster, but we all know putting glasses and over-alls on Rachael Leigh Cook doesn't make her unattractive.

reply

The Truth about Cats and Dogs, altho in my opinion the female lead wasn't ugly, she was just not hollywood's ideal of beautiful, she actually plays Uma Thurman's friend, but Uma's not the lead character, and IMHO the guy is hot.

WHAT THE FVCK IS A BIEBER????

reply

Garofalo was alot better looking than Uma. They think we like androgynous looking super thin women blonde women. It's all gay fashion designers fault.

Garofalo had a prettier face, a more curvy body, better smile and far superior personality. I thought the premise was pretty ridiculous.

reply

I wholeheartedly agree!

Bingo, nailed it! Even the best porn-stars are shorter than 5-6 and not skinny.

No, I'm laughing with you not at{against} you!

Hot guy falls in love with ugly girl has been done before remember "Sixteen Candles"? I mean com'on Jake Ryan the best looking guy in school wants to dump his drop dead gorgeous gf with blonde hair and big boobs in favour of plain jane Molly Ringwald ,because he wants "something meaningful"????
There is no such as a 17 year old high scool boy who wants something meaningful, he wants a hottie, if John Hughes (or whoever) wanted to make that movie realistic he should have had Jake banging one the hot teachers played by Raquel Welch or Cheryl Ladd ,

Boston and Philly wanna slander us, but they don't have as many fans as us

reply

Plain is not ugly. Plus Molly was a redhead.

reply

Looks doesn't really play a big part in relationships unless it's extreme. So very ugly or very beautiful, and even then only at the beginning of a relationship. Plain, doesn't cut it as a dramatic device. Most would actually say Molly Ringwald is attractive if not pretty.

So a girl would have to be 'uglified' ala Theron in 'Monster' (who barely qualified as 'ugly' in my opinion, it was mainly her character that was a turn off, she still had a nice body for example)

Think Rasputia in Norbit. Ugly and mean.

reply

What about Mare Winningham and Rob Lowe in St. Elmo's Fire? Mare is NOT ugly, but she's more a "plain" type...

If you can't be good, at least be good at it!

reply

He didn't fall for Mare's character. She was a sexual conquest for him because she was a virgin. He basically knew that she had a crush on him and used it to his advantage. He was a married man going through some quarter life crisis.

reply

If you ask me, Molly Ringwald is anything but plain.

reply

Well, the real problem in both situations (either ugly guy and hot girl or ugly girl and hot guy) is that the 'ugly' person is never and never ACTUALLY ugly.

I mean, we have example of Ugly Betty/Betty La Fea. Are those heroines clumsy, irritating, with horrible clothes, too big glasses, unelocvent, childish, messy, geeky? Of course! But are they REALLY UGLY? Like in 'Ugly face-ugly?' I don't think so.

Same with male 'beasts'. It's always actually attractive person with some kind of curse or bad accessories and they are ridiculed for it, BUT at the end, as the 'beauty' is attraced to them, they get a makeover and although the looks doesn't matter is the moral of the story, at the end they always get both.

Of course not all leading men or women are hot to everyone, but almost all are supposed to be in script/director's POV.

Also, I'd like to add something else to the topic:

WHY in both cases, the male is always the one who is A$$Y? Why is never the female the nasty one? Either it is a hot and vain womanizer who falls for 'ugly Betty-type', yet shy and nice ugly girl OR it is Scared guy 'beast' who is acting like a douche cause of it and he meets a girl who is beautiful both on the outside and inside. The guy is never actually bad, but in both cases HE, never SHE, is the one who is nastier and needs to change his attitude? Why?

reply

Because that's what attracts women to theaters. Women can relate to the premise of "woman meets man, falls in love, tries to change man to fit her ideal."

reply

I'm sorry but I don't go to movies to see ugly people or people who look like I work with them.
Ugly girls have been with better looking girls, Bridget Jones was definitely one of them. She always reminded me of a pig. And I would definitely put Molly Ringwald with Jake Ryan on the list. That man was a 9.5 and she's a 4.
Unfortunately on TV especially there are too many shows where butt ugly men are paired with incredibly hot women: King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond, According To Jim etc.

"Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging"... The main character had an unattractive face and a slightly nasty personality (she was SUPPOSED to be that way - it wasn't just the actress) but the good-looking Prince Charming of the movie really liked her.

reply

Thank god you mentioned it! Such a good example!

The guy is hot and very nice, and he falls for this ugly AND annoying girl. Totally fits the premise.

reply

Hollywood makes plenty of movies where the ugly girl ends up with a hot guy. only problem is, the 'ugly' girl is never actually ugly. Rachel Leigh Cook in She's All That, Sissy Spacek in Carrie, Leelee Sobieski and Drew Barrymore in Never Been Kissed. and even then the girl gets a makeover

a female version of the Beast would probably raise a whole heap of unfortunate implications. a girl being punished for paying too much attention to her looks when living in a society that puts pressures on her to do so? then you'd still get people complaining when she gets turned back in the end saying "see looks matter after all. he got to have a hot girl in the end"
