Question about the Director's Cut and Deleted Scenes

I know there's a director's cut on the recent DVD that's about 170 minutes long. But there are also deleted scenes on the DVD as well. Are these scenes IN ADDITION to the director's cut, or are they simply the scenes that weren't in the original, but were edited into the director's cut? Thank you.
