Love of Siam Part 2?

Okay, I got your attention, right? lol. Anyway, i just watched this movie and I really enjoyed it. It's one of the best gay love stories I have ever seen. The struggles portrayed by all the characters were extremely truthful. I was a bit disappointed with the ending but I know not everything will have a happy ending and my favorite couples getting together. It just happens in a perfect world and we all know this world isn't. Anyway, do you guys think there's a chance that they will produce a second part to Siam? I mean, the movie ended up with something that they could easily develop more stories into. For example, the second movie could talk about Tong's coming to accept himself more after he deals with his family(which was mostly resolved torwards the end) and we need to know if June is Tang. (If it was explained in the movie, then i'm sorry I didn't catch it and I heard that the director refused to talk about June/Tang). The actress who portrayed Jun/Tang was so brilliant and pretty.

So, do you think there's a possiblity for a second movie? I heard it did well in Thailand and it won SO many awards. I hope that's enough incentives! Also, has the movie been licensed in the United STates? I know "Bangkok Love Story" (another gay themed movie from Thailand) had been licensed in the U.S. and it's coming out this year but how about this one? I want to buy the DVD with subtitles.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading so many responses and discussions from you guys here. I coudln't find anywhere else to talk about this movie but thanks in advance for any answers!!

(1)Jung and Tang are not the same person. You can refer to other materials online.

(2)There's no need to produce a second movie after this one. Sometimes the sad stories, or to say the stories with unhappy ends, can make people think more.
That's one reason why I like this movie.

I agree, as much as we want Tong and Mew to be together...I think a sequel will probably just ruin the story...for example, a new happy ending would have just made the story not as effect as it is...and if they make a second with the same type of sad ending - then wouldn't it be just too redundant...I think the movie received so much attention because of the fact that after all the struggles, the two did not end up together, at least by the end of the movie...plus like greenhouse said, a good movie/story will make you think about it long after - which i think is achieved successfully in the movie...i only wish the movie would be release in the US!...and hopefully it gets something from the Oscar because i just found out it was Thailand's nomination for the 2009 Oscar foreign language film...

Hi again vy - I'm with you on wanting Tong and Mew to be together. But even if that could not happen, I need to be able to envision a scenario in which Tong finds love. I'm not worried about Mew - Tong showed Mew that he could find love and move beyond the fear of losing it. He was able to move on.

But I see Tong having a bitter life. As another reviewer predicted - most likely a hetero marriage to please Sunee and the neighbors, furtive side relationships with men, drink like his father or drugs, and damaged children to perpetuate the tragedy. [Tong's sacrifice is symbolized when he goes to his room after the Christmas-tree confrontation with his mother and throws himself on his bed beneath the poster of Christ on the cross.]

I mentioned in another post that Tong stole my heart right from the prologue. I was really taken with his courage (coming to Mew's rescue, and later coming out to his mother), his love for Mew (the joy he got giving the gift and the whole treasure hunt scheme), his stoicism, his concern for his parents, especially his mother (which she turns into a weapon to destroy his happiness). I needed to have hope for Tong, but his mother's controlling 'love' did not leave much room for hope.

"Nothing personal. Your name just happened to come up."

In Thailand, releasing a sequel for a movie like this would be really unacceptable. (You can refer to Thai message boards on this).

From my perspective, I can only see the sequel being more stressful than even a little bit of happy ending. And trust me on this if there's one, it would ruin the whole thing if they decide to put a happy ending to this.

I think you are desiring too much concrete closure; it would defeat the purpose and completely subvert the themes which were handled so well in this film.

to all responses so far: Phooo-eee!
I say make a sequel if you'd like but make it different in mood. Less drama, more comedy and feel good. With the same protagonists just a few years later. Would be fun to see, def!
